You would think, that hardware manufacturers would make it “easy” to
uninstall a @#%^(@ printer!
But nooooooooo…….can’t have that, it would be too friggin easy!!
I started around 5 to install the new HP 7660 printer. Finished it at
8:30pm!!!
Ok, I played Bill’s game, and UNINSTALLED the Lexmark Z52 printer.
Checking the printers
box, I still saw the z52, so I right clicked and removed it. No
problem right? Nope!
On the first install of the HP printer, it kept saying that there is a
problem installing the
printer, check bla bla bla……, when I go back to install printers, the
adobe distiller “printer”
is gone! So I clicked on add printers and I get a warning box saying
that I can’t do that.
What???!!!!
So, I go to XP services and noticed that the print spooler is stopped.
No problem, I’ll just
restart it……buzzzzzzzzz can’t do that, there is a missing dependency!
Guess what, the Lexmark
printer that I PROPERLY removed in the printers box, didn’t unattach
the print spooler dependency
so it shut off. No problem, I’ll just put the printers back, no wait,
can’t do that, the add printers
is hosed. Now what? At least Bill’s system restore works! I just
rolled back to 5am Monday, which
was the latest system restore. After rebooting, the printers are
back, spooler is working. Found
the Lexmark service in the services section running. No problem, I’ll
just stop it. Buzzzzz……
can’t do that either! If I try to shut it down, I get a warning that
the spooler will be halted.
Ok, now what. Can’t install the new one, can’t uninstall the old one.
Google time!!!
Found a registry hack…… To properly remove the dependency, you have to
hack the registry setting
to remove it, THEN, stop the Lexmark service, THEN, disable it, THEN
stop and restart the print
spooler. NOW….you can install your printer.
From the knowledge base on MS, the Lexmark printer dependency must be
a real problem. I found
all sorts of references to that.

And people wonder why my hair is turning grey?

THE MOMENT i SAW hp PRINTER, i KNEW THIS WAS GONNA BE GOOD. I have 6 or 8

good luck

Oh, I got it to work......after wrestling with the lexmark service not
wanting to uninstall itself properly
I'll agree with you on the HP issue of "does not play well with
others", remember back in the old zip parallel port days? I can't
tell you the number of times I had friends that couldn't get it to
work, because the HP printer would not work with the zip pass
through.
