PRINT SPOOLER fault

Dear All

I have an XP laptop that will not print to an HP deskjet USB printer, yet if
I set the setting to "print directly to printer" it works fine.

I have stopped and restarted the print spooler service - no joy
I have removed and reinstalled the printer - no joy
I have renamed "spoolsv.exe" in C:\windows\system32 and then copied this
file from the Windows XP cd back into this directory and rebooted windows -
still no joy.

Is anyone able to offer any wisdom please? Things are getting desperate now...

Yes it is the only printer installed.
