spoolsv.exe in Windows XP

Good Morning

Dear All

I have an XP laptop that will not print to an HP deskjet USB printer,
which is online and set as the default (and in fact only) printer

If I go into advance settings and change to "print directly to printer"
it works fine.

I have stopped and restarted the print spooler service - no joy
I have removed and reinstalled the printer with the latest drivers from
the HP website - no joy
I have renamed "spoolsv.exe" in C:\windows\system32 and then copied
this
file from the Windows XP cd back into this directory and rebooted
windows -
still no joy.

Is anyone able to offer any wisdom please? Things are getting desperate
now as have been trawling MS KBs for weeks now...

Yours despairingly

Exactly the same issue with my Canon ip5000 with USB connection to a desktop
P4 with xp pro. I've done all the fixes that Canon has suggested and
finally am printing directly to the printer. What a pain in the ass! This
must be a bug in xp pro having to do with the spooler. I've been requesting
help now for several weeks on this an other xp NG's. So far, no suggestion
has worked. I hope that MS pros on this NG will get back to MS and work out
a fix for this obnoxious problem.

Hi,

Could you tell me how you "print directly to printer" and where that tab is
found? I went into Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, Tools, Folder Options,
Advanced Settings, but didn't find it. If there is a way I can print again,
I would greatly appreciate it. My print spooler is not running, I've tried
the fixes (cleanspl utility, it would not work) and I've asked for additional
guidance here in the Windows XP Newsgroups, but no one has responded (See my
post below, "Cleanspl Utility Will Not Work", July 2, 2006). So if I can
print another way, I thank you for the help. Kind regards, rmcw

You set it for each individual printer. In the printers and faxes area
right click the printer, click properties, click advanced, and click on the
bullet point for print directly to the printer. Report back to see if this
gets your printer working. Unfortunately, you can't use your computer while
the print job is in progress like you can when you print through the
spooler. Wish MS would solve this problem for us as it drastically slows
down workflow. I've seen lots of posts about this problem with various
printers and xp pro. I have two printers on my computer, the canon ip5000
inkjet through a USB connection (can't use the spooler with this one) and an
HP5p connected via parallel port (and works fine with the spooler.) All
other devices - card reader, external HD, bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and
scanner - work fine with USB connections. My i960 printer, connected via
USB, worked just fine with the spooler until the printhead started
banding,so I replaced it with my wife's ip5000 which works just fine on her
PC with xp pro. I suspect that mine is different in that I have it set for
auto xp updates and hers is not. Might be related to an update that screwed
up the spooler function with the ip5000.

Dear Burt,

Thanks so much for writing and explaining the procedure for printing
directly. I see how to do it now. And I totally agree with you that
Microsoft knows, or should know, about these print spooler problems because
it's all over the internet, and should do something about it. (How about a
press conference or some such barrage of communication to them?)

Anyway, I found a forum called Geeks To Go: Free Computer Help,
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=5, and they responded to
my issue, which discussion you might want to view here:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Print_Spooler_Not_Running_Cleanspl_Utility_Will_Not_Work-t120133.html.

In any event, nervous about the serious fixes they set forth (based on my
inexperience), I tried one more time to fix the print spooler with my own
trial and error and copied below is what I did for your information. I hope
it might be helpful, but you might also want to check out Geeks To Go, people
seem to try to be helpful a lot and it's a staffed site (volunteers, of
course) with monitors who are technically proficent from around the world.
Again, thanks for your help and good luck.

Kind regards,

rmcw

Here's What I Did:

Keith,

I wanted you to know what happened. Before I followed your instructions, I
tried one last time to start the print spooler. This is what I did. I went
into services and re-started the print spooler, having the control panel and
printers and faxes page open at the same time. I re-started the spooler but
did not click ok. I then went to the icon for my Xerox XD printer,
right-clicked and was able to delete it. And it disappeared. I then went to
the server properties, which I wasn't able to get into before and saw the
drivers tab and the Xerox printer. I tried to remove the drivers, but it told
me that the printer was in use, so I could not remove them. I downloaded the
XP version of the drivers for the Xerox XD printer from Xerox' website and
saved it to a download folder. Scared, I turned off the computer and printer.
Restarted the computer and printer and installed the new drivers. I followed
the install instructions for the drivers (even though the drivers are not
Windows signature, but Xerox said do it anyway) and then installed the new
hardware (my Xerox XD printer); it sent a test page (and even before I
deleted the printer from the control panel, the printer worked and I used it
to print your instructions and it worked okay). I've printed a page since
re-installing drivers and found new hardware and it's working. What do you
think? Do you think it's temporary and that's there's a larger problem? A lot
of people have had print spooler problems on these message boards...something
must be wrong. In 11 years, this is the first time it's happened to me....if
you all have clout with Microsoft, can you make them clearly state the
problem, why it happened, and how to fix it? I think that would help all of
us.

As for you, I want to thank you very much for your kind assistance and hope
that this will work permanently and might help someone else.

Kind regards,

rmcw
