Possible to open archive folder with another program?

Because of disk space issues, I've been made by IT to store all my older
emails in an archive folder in a network folder. This is fine for everyday
use, because I can open my archived emails right from within Outlook.
However, if I'm working from home and trying to view my emails from the
exchange server, I have no access to old emails - very frustrating!!

I have a backup of the archived mail folder. Is there any way I can see
anything in it without opening it from Outlook?

Alternatively, I can open Outlook on my laptop (but not connected to the
Internet or to my network). Usually if I try to open it, it says "you're not
connected to the network...do you want to open your default mail folders?".
If I say no, it closes Outlook. Is there a way to get it to open the archive
folder at this point so I can view the emails?

Using Outlook 2000. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm assuming you're using Exchange from your description. Do you have
Offline Folders enabled?

Nope...one more thing our antiquated IT won't let us do for "security
reasons". Nice how all this supposed security reduces my productivity by
about 1000%!?!?

So I guess I'm hooped. Thanks anyway.
