Problem: Windows does not recognize my external Plextor
DVD Burner connected via firewire on start up. I made
sure several times that i had the drive powered on and
connected prior to booting up windows. Yet it does not
show the drive in 'My Computer', nor does the plug and
play icon appear in the task window. The only way i can
get windows to recognize the drive is by turning the
burner off then on again after windows is already
running. Only after doing this does the device properties
indicate it's working properly. I have the same problem
with another external drive via firewire. I have also
tried plugging the firewire cord into different firewire
ports (one port is on the video card and the other is a
pci card.) So i don't believe that the hardware (the
burner itself or the firewire ports) are the problem. It
seems to be a windows issue... as if windows does not
automatically search for external (plug and play) devices
upon start up. I need windows to recognize the drive
automatically because when i use Norton Ghost Backup, it
reboots the system and fails to recognize the drive
automatically. I have installed the latest firmware for
the Plextor Drive, i have installed the lastest patches
and drivers for Windows XP Professional and i have
installed the latest updates for Norton Ghost. Any
suggestions...

Update motherboard BIOS and chipset drivers. As long as the BIOS and chipset
notify the OS that a device is present, it will be detected. However, if the
BIOS does not indicate the presence of a device, the OS will fail to detect
it.
