Password remember failing on IE6.0

Hi!

I did face this IE6.0 password remember failing problem first time about a
month ago. What may have been causing it ...

I have now been checking the other same topics on this thread and trying the
suggested correction procedures, but they do not seem to help.

The status is
a) auto-complete check boxes are all on
b) lsass.exe is seen running on Task Manager
c) pstorec.dll dated with the install date is found inside Windows\System32
d) but, haven't yet been able to check if the Protected Storage Service is
started properly as not knowing the exact local language name for it, so far

I did already try to create a new user, and when logged on with it the
password saving was asked and automatically re-fetched all well ... until I
copied the Documents and Settings from my original user to the new user ...
So, it probably has something to do with some file inside Documents and
Settings.

Please, if there still is some other workaround for this, I would very much
appreciate getting info on it.

Hi!

Yes, still more interesting, or maybe complicated, as when testing further I
found, that the password ask and remember failing is valid just for one
certain page, namely my webmail login page, some three-four other web login
pages with passwords seem to work in this all OK.

Maybe there is some "hiding" explanation for this behaviour somehow
connected to this certain web login page ...

further I found, that the password ask and remember failing is valid
just for one certain page, namely my webmail login page, some
three-four other web login pages with passwords seem to work in this
all OK.

Maybe there is some "hiding" explanation for this behaviour somehow
connected to this certain web login page ...

Is this page a secure site? Namely does it begin with HTTPS? IIRC by default
IE won't remember passwords on secure pages as that's a security risk. I
don't think there's a work-around for this without a third party
application.

But, what a cat/mouse play going on ...

Now I got it working, but not this usual straight way
1. writing the UserId in it's box, with auto-completing, if wanted
2. changing to the Password box with the Tab key
3. the Password appears automatically to the box as "stars"
4. pressing the Enter key
5. Login succeeded

but, like this ...
1. writing the UserId in it's box, with no auto-complete appearing
2. changing to the Password box with the Tab key
changing back to the UserId box with the Shift+Tab keys, getting the
UserId blued
changing once again to the Password box with the Tab key
3. the Password appears automatically to the box as "stars"
4. pressing the Enter key
5. Login succeeded

So, without this there-here-there game on point 2 the Password should be
always typed as such on point 3. This indicates some kind of small fault
somewhere on the WinXPPro/IE6.0, as on Win98SE/IE6.0 I haven't been facing
this slight deficit ...

Out of curiousity I went and tried it with the above methods. It did not
replicate here on WinXP Pro SP1. If need be I could check it on a SP2 box.
Typing or allowing autocomplete to work was fine and trying it in all
lowercase letters (my username was all uppercase on creation of saved
password) also resulted in the password being inserted. Is everything up to
date on your computer? Do you have SP1 or SP2 installed?

Thanks for your reply and interest on this case Galen.

My WinXPPro is all up-to-date SP2, ... except the .Net update from last
week, which did fail and I haven't yet had time to work on it, anyway have
already found a correction "procedure" for it from these pages.

When the first time facing this password remember failing sometime early-mid
January, my first guess was, that maybe some Windows update has been causing
it or my ISP changed something, but unfortunately that time didn't have time
enough to check or note it too thoroughly and now it's too late.

Let's see, what you could find for this ...

I have just tried to recreate this with an SP2 installation and it seems to
remember the password just fine. I've tried typing it in, I've tried letting
it autocomplete, and it seems to insert the password without any problems.
It doesn't sound very evil and if your system is clean I'd not worry about
it too much. Perhaps you have some third party application installed on your
computer that's causing this odd behavior? Honestly I've never seen this
problem and can't recreate it here as it works without a problem with either
autocomplete or with manually typing it in.

Thanks again, and sorry, that this wasn't a case for an apparent solution.

This is maybe a special case problem, doesn't harm too much, and maybe some
day got corrected as silent as also appearing.
