outlook 2003: have contacts but no address book

I have outlook 2003
I can send an receive mail without problem.
I have a Contcts folder/list with 50 contacts.
But I cannot seem to make an address book to contain my contacts.

Menu: Tools/Address book is empty: no suggestions, no contacts etc.

My contacts/properties/Outlook address book is GREYED OUT ("show this
folder etc...")

menu: tools/e-mail accounts/view or change existing directories
etc../add/additional..etc/outlook address book gives me an error
message:
the account you have added is not fully configured. It might not work
properly until re-configured correctly.

(I just entered my e-mail account settings anew and is IS correct and
working)

What is wrong here ? any suggestions ?

Ah, yes , obviously, but that did not work. It stubbornly stayed
greyed-out
I found out, I had to rename the stubborn outlook.pst, start a new,
empty .pst file, put the empty contact list in the address book (by
the previously grayed-out mark) and then import the renamed file's
content into the empty .pst.

Conclusion: Outlook ain't easy nor obvious.... anymore, when you have
to dive deep into the many menus. It's like a swiss army knife: lots
of tools and facilities, but it can suddenly snap shut with your
fingers caught between some of them.

That should not have been necessary. If you add the OAB service correctly,
it will work.

What specifically didn't work? Details matter. Perhaps Outlook did not completely shut down before you restarted it. Did you check in Task Manager? Did you restart Windows?

Fiddling with the .pst file was an unnecessary step.
