Outlook 2003 hangs and will not end completely on exit

I'm having a problem with Outlook 2003 (on Windows XP Pro) not closing
completely when I exit. The icon will not disappear from
the task bar. The process will not terminate from the
Task Manager unless I manually "End Task" it.

I have tried the following:
*Uninstall and reinstall Office 2003 several times
* Removed all mail account and profiles and recreated them
*Office Detect and Repair
*I've gotten all Windows and Office updates
*I have Norton Anti-Virus running

This has happened on at least 3 different machines so far. I have searched
Microsoft's Knowledge Base and can't come up with anything.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Adjust the timeout setting to last a little longer than the default. What
kind of mail server are you attached to? Are you using the setting "Check
for new mail upon exit?"

I'm going chip in to this thread, as I'm having the same
difficulty.

My install access the POP3 mailserver at my ISP. Not
linked to a local server as yet.

Where do we change "Check for new mail on exit?"

Tools->Option->Mail Setup-> Send/Receive Options

You will see a box there.

Thank you. Found it right after posting.

However that box was unchecked (probably why I didn't see
it 1st time round), and whether checked or not makes no
difference.

Often, but not always, when I load Outlook again, I get
the message stating that "the current folder was not
closed properly", and a quick integrity check? takes
place. Other occasions it will offer to start in Safe
Mode.

Something I also noted, that if Word2k3 is used in
conjunction with Outlook, it too remains loaded as a
process after exiting Outlook. Have you seen how much
memory that mama uses up?

C'mon Microsoft, give us a patch already....

I'm connecting to a local Exchange 2003 Server.

The "Check for new mail upon exit" setting makes no difference whether
checked or unchecked.
