Outlook 2002 Rules Wizard Does Not Run Automatically

I have several mail rules set up on Outlook 2002 and all of them are selected
in the Rules Wizard. However, whenever I launch Outlook, all new messages
remain in the Inbox and the rules are never applied. Once Outlook is left
open, the rules typically get applied to new incoming messages (though not to
those that still remain from initially opening Outlook). I can always run
the rules manually and they work perfectly. Any thoughts on how to make the
rules work all the time, including when Outlook is first opened?

Rules apply to messages when they are sent or received so you need to either
run them manually on existing items or let them function as email arrives or
when you send it.

Bill, thanks for the info...I must not have explained the issue very well.
When I open Outlook and do an initial send/receive, all new emails simply sit
in the inbox and don't move to folders as dictated by the rules. I can
manually run the rules, but then all the older messages already in the inbox
(those that were not part of the new send/receive) are impacted. The rules
usually work on send/receives after the initial one (when opening Outlook),
so I don't know what would be different there. Any ideas?

Only to ensure Outlook is up to date with service packs and maybe wait for a
while after loading Outlook before you do the first send/receive.

Okay, thanks, Bill. I actually think the service packs/security updates are
causing many of my issues. I don't remember ever having the mail rules work
correctly on the startup send/receive, but I know that since I've installed
some of the automatic updates, Outlook now closes down on my without any
warning (see additional post from 07/08 for help on Outlook closing when I
copy text, click on a hyperlink, while typing an email, whenever). So far,
Outlook and IE have both been adversely affected by automatic updates on my
system.
