1st person shooters - X-Box+
Stealth/tactical - X-Box
online Sports - Playstation II rules.
offline sports - Pretty much even
online shooters/tactical - X-Box
Action/adventure - even draw although PS II has more worthy titles.
Fighting games - even

Online games require broadband.

I have both..and in my opinion xbox is better for a few reasons.A game
like fifa 2004 (and previously 3) that came out on both consoles, would
on the ps2 "pause" in certain circumstances e.g when you took a shot at
goal you knew youd scored because it would "pause" slightly loading the
after goal celebrations. This doesnt happen on xbox which is far more
powerful and able to handle more. Also games like wolfenstien again on
both had more options on the xbox version i.e multiplayer Also you dont
need to buy a memory card for xbox as you use the hard drive. Also you can
copy your fav cds to xbox and use them on most games as most recent xbox
games allow you to use your own choice of bacgground musin in the
game. The only plus sign i can see with the ps2 is the controller seems
much more user friendly ,although the new xbox controllers are
significantly smaller .

It's pretty hard to say what's 'best' for you without you supplying some
criteria. The general consensus is the X-Box is more powerful and the PS2
has the larger selection of games.

X-Box has a hard drive so you don't need an optional memory card to save
games.

PS2 can play DVD's right out of the box while the X-Box needs an optional
accessory.

PS2 can play your PS1 games.

Microsoft charges for online play while Sony doesn't.

Microsoft's online play is restricted to high speed connections and Sony's
isn't.

Here is an older article comparing them:

i have read that the next version of xbox will not play xbox games that are
used for the current xbox so i would go for the playstation 2.

I have read the opposite. True. X-Box will be using a PowerPC chip but
will use a built in emulator to play x86 (older) X-Box titles. Microsoft
has already acquired the company that makes the emulators.

Wow, really? Where'd you hear that -- I hope it's only speculation.
That seems like a very foolish move on M$'s part--they have a hard
enough time competing with Sony as it is.
so i would go for the playstation 2.

Backwards compatibility aside, as it has already been stated -- the real
question is not which system is better or best but which is better or
best for you. While in this day and age, many games are being released
on multiple platforms, each gaming system does have a bit of a different
flavor of games typical to its library.

Also stated previously, PS2 plays DVD's out of the box -- Xbox requires
a 15-20 dollar add-on (remote) to do so. Xbox does have a hard drive,
saving you money on memory cards (though it supports them, as well) --
and, perhaps the biggest advantage to Xbox's hard drive is that you can
burn CD's to it. Flip on the xbox and play music with it or, in some
games, use your CD's as a sound track.
