Office 2007 SMTP Problem

I recently decided to switch back from Mozilla Thunderbird to Microsoft
Outlook, because of Outlook's built in calendar, tasks, integration with
OneNote, etc…and everything worked fine, until a few weeks ago.
I have 2 email addresses, my University one and a SBC/Yahoo! one from back
home. Each have their own POP3 and SMTP server addresses. Early last year I
discovered that the University blocks the use of any other SMTP servers
besides their own, and in Thunderbird it was easy to set up the SBCGlobal
account to use the St. Andrews SMTP server as default, while still appearing
to send from sbcglobal address. Outlook, however, does not do this as easily.
So what I tried to do was change the SBCGlobal SMTP box to the address of the
University one, rather than the default SBCGlobal SMTP server. I tried
sending a test email, and it failed. I was confused, but decided to mess with
it later, so I returned the addresses to normal.
But now, whenever I try and send an email from my St. Andrews account, it
starts the Send/Receive, says “Sending Message 1 of 1†(or 2 of 2, even
though theres only 1 email in the outbox) in the bottom corner, but
eventually times out. The email stays in the outbox, but it has actually
already been processed by the server and sent out. I’ve found a way around
this (that only works a small percentage of the time) where I cancel the
send/receive when it says Sending Message, and remove the email from the
Outbox and into the Sent Items. However sometimes, it gets stuck on
“Preparing to send/receiveâ€, and I am unable to cancel for a short while.
When I finally am able to cancel, I try Send/Receiving, but nothing happens.
The email simply stays in the outbox, and it says Send/Receive Complete. But
the email has not been sent. Sometimes this leads to the email being sent
multiple times, sometimes it doesnt send at all.
I’ve contacted my Univeristy "helpdesk", but they do not support Outlook
because it “isn’t stableâ€, which is sort of evident based on this problem.
I’ve tried sending emails through Thunderbird, and it works fine (even now).
I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled, but nothing. I’ve made new “Profiles†in the
Mail settings, but nothing. It’s fairly annoying, especially since I have to
BCC to myself to make sure the email goes through, and even then it usually
sends twice.

Any advice you have would be GREATLY appreciated.

weeks. And now, I'm receiving the "Not Implemented" error message, which is
how I found this forum. It seems like Outlook is just crumbling down around
me, and I'm considering switching back to Thunderbird! :-(

Are you running a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook? Disable this
integration and try again.

Nope, I'm not. I've checked things down that line as well, anti-spyware,
firewalls, etc etc. Nothing
