Outgoing mail problem

Tom

I’ve been trying to solve the following problem for the last few days with no
result.
Here’s the scenario:

Small peer to peer LAN
OS: Windows XP
POP3 email account
Email Client: Outlook 2003 /2007
POP3 – 995 (SSL)
SMTP – 465 (SSL)
Internet: T1

Problem: All users get the following error when they try to send mail
“Sending and Receiving reported error (0x800ccc0f): 'The connection to the
server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact the server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).â€
They can receive mail. The email has been working fine. No software or
hardware has been changed in the network.

Here’s what I did to eliminate the problem.

- Disabled antivirus & firewall: no result, the same error
- Bypassed the router and connected one of the computer directly to the
modem: no result, the same error
- Changed the SMTP 465 port to 25: no result, the same error
- Changed a user profile: not result, the same error
- I could telnet either 465 & 25 ports.
- I set up a gmail account (it uses SMTP 465 SSL for outgoing mail) in the
same outlook to test if I could send mail using the 465 port and it worked,
so I made sure the port 465 is not blocked
- I could send email using one of the POP3 accounts from another location
(not from their LAN), so there’s no issue with their email provider.

I’m pretty puzzled here, not sure what else I can try.

Hi Diane, thanks for the reply.
Yes, I tried to use OE instead, no result, the same error.
I've checked the authentication options many times, even tried a new profile.

I just used a different SMTP server (smtp1.dnsmadeeasy.com) and it worked
(uses the port 25).
