office 2003 will not open .exe and .doc in windows explorer XP

When I double-click on a file in windows explorer, excel and word will take
5+ minutes to open the file and often will lock up (get gray) when I try to
open a file in windows explorer. Most of the time, the windows explorer
window will go to 'not responding'.

Files will open every time in both programs from the file open menu just not
from windows explorer.

I have reset file associations and they are correct. I have scanned for
viruses and then turned off my virus program (CA). I have run a registry
scan. I have reset the data entry in the registry. I have uninstalled my
printer.

I have done a repair reinstallation of windows XP and used the MS program to
completely remove office and then reinstalled office. I also did a detect and
repair on word.

Such a lot of effort! You need to click on Tools, Options, select the
General tab, and ensure that the option "Ignore other applications" is not
ticked After that, exit Excel, go into Explorer, double click on any Excel
file and it will open!

Thanks for the response. "ignore other applications' was one of the first
things I did. Any other ideas?
