Hi, I have tried upgrading XP to SP3 from SP2. I could not succeed despite of
multiple attempts. I logged in as Administrator in safe mode. It always fails
with the same reason - Access Denied.

2396.797: DoInstallation: Installing assemblies with source root path:
c:\7713b2643206635fd4011165e0ef3cb3\i386\
2404.875: Error installing assemblies, GLE=5
2416.750: Unregistration of sprecovr successful
2417.672: Access is denied.

I tried to confirm to the pre requisites, everything seems perfect. I tried
to follow Access Denied related stuff, nothing helped. Could anyone help me
to fix this.

Regards, Raja

Hi Raja,
Try to run disk cleanup and then download SP3 on your desktop. Disable your
Firewall and Anti-Virus then try the installation. If the installation
complete and was success, please try to Renable your Firewall and Anti-virus
Programs.

When you try to install Windows XP Service Pack, you receive the error
message "Access is denied" or "Service Pack installation did not complete"

<Q::>
If there are any previous installations of either beta or release candidate
versions of Sp3, then you must uninstall them before installing the final
version.

Download and install subinact.exe.
Download from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-D8FE-4A91-93CF-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=en

Open Notepad (Start Menu-All Programs-Accessories-Notepad) and copy and
paste the text below into the new Notepad document:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

Save-As “reset.cmd†(yes, including the quotation marks) to C:\Program
Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools.

Now, Open My Computer and double-click the file you just created in
C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools.

Wait for the program to finish running before continuing on (yes, it takes a
while, that’s normal).

Download and install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (which, although on
Microsoft’s servers, is noticeably absent from their website).
</Q::>
HTH,
