SP3 - Access is denied

P

Pieter

Hi,

I receive this "Access is denied"-error when trying to install the Service
Pack 3 for Windows XP. When trackign down the error in the svcpack.log (see
udnerneath), it has apparently something to do with missing rights on my
registry, which is quit bizar because I am Administrator on my machine. I
gave my user explicit full control on my registry, but I still have this
error.

Does anybody has any idea how to fix this problem?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Pieter

You have access permission problem on registry.

(1) Open a file "setupai.log" at C:\windows (use notepad or WordPad)

(2) Search a word for "denied"

(3) You will find which key(s) is causing "Access denied" error.

(4) Open "regedit.exe"

(5) Search for problem key(s).

(6) Check permission for problem key(s).
Change "Administrators" permission to "Full Control"

(7) Try to SP3 update again...

or

Try method 3 on from MS to change permission.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

This will change ALL administrators permissions within registry.

Good Luck!

Method 1: same error
Method 2: same error
Method 3: I have 14 Failed. Is there a way to see which ones have failed
exactly?
I have this "last failed" on the screen, which doesn't show the key
completely, but shows this:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY\SECRETS\SCM:{E3B269B5-FB57-4501-" the rest is
missing...
