Windows XP Pro SP3 Fails during Install

I'm trying to update Windows XP Pro Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.
080814-1233: Service Pack 2) from a purchased Microsoft CD of SP3 (Internet
connection to slow for downloads). Everything backs up fine and then goes to
the Install phase. About 2 minutes into the Install at the Registry part
everything stops and an error message says "Service Pack 3 Setup canceled."

The svcpack log file is very big so I'll only post a part of it where things
start to fail.

I think you should go about this very methodically.

Do you have an HP branded computer with an AMD processor?
(If so - answer and wait. If not, answer and continue with the steps.)

Once you have provided that information, I suggest a little cleanup...

Do all of this in the order given. Do not skip a step because you
think/know you have done it before or don't think you should have
to do it because of whatever reasoning... ;-)

If you experience any errors, get any strange messages, want further
explanation for any step - come back. Post messages word-for-word.
Describe exactly what you see around the message and what you did right
before that may have caused the message.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.

Search your registry for %fystem and replace the "f" with an "s". May be
three or four matches, may be none. You may even have to take ownership
of the keys in order to make the change.

Then...

Ignore the title and follow the sub-section under "Advanced Troubleshooting"
titled, "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions"

Reboot.

Download/install this:

After installing, do the following:

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap.exe" g!
--> Click OK.
(The quotation marks and percentage signs and spacing should be exact.)

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )

Reboot.

and...

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):

.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:

--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.) Never get hardware drivers
for hardware that was not created/sold by Microsoft from Microsoft.

Reboot.

Now for SP3...

1) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically disconnect -
pull the network cable or disable the router/modem.)

2) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to
install SP3. Usually right-click on the icon in the taskbar gives you
a choice to do so.

Install SP3 by using the CD you said you have. Reboot when requested
to do so. Logon and let the machine 'settle' for about 10 minutes.
Reboot. Give it 5 minutes after logon to 'settle'...

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a
CUSTOM scan...

Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time. Rebooting as needed.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or
"Windows Live" ones for now. I would completely avoid the
Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install
Internet Explorer 8 at this time.

Do all of that in the order given. Do not skip a step because you
think/know you have done it before.

If you experience any errors, get any strange messages, want further
explanation for any step - come back. Post messages word-for-word.
Describe exactly what you see around the message and what you did right
before that may have caused the message.

In the end - come back - respond with your results.

Is the account you're using to install SP3 Administrator or have
Administrator rights? I suggest booting into Safe Mode and trying to
install it that way. Copy the SP3 file from the CD to your desktop
first. Let me know how that goes.

No this isn't an HP system, it's a semi-custom system:

Antec Tower 2 speed fan case, 1000w power supply, ASUS P5N-E SLI
motherboard, Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz processor, 4 meg 1033 MHz
memory, 2- 160GB Western Digital SATA II 7200rpm HD's internal, 500GB Maxtor
One Touch HD external, nVidea GeForce 8800GT 1MB Graphics Card, DVD CD-RW,
DVD-ROM, Multi-Card USB 2.0 reader, Logitech Trackman Wheel, Internal Realtek
High Definition sound, Altec Lansing speakers. Motorola SM56 internal Modem.
I know XP 32bit doesn't use the full memory but I set it up so I can upgrade
to a 64bit OS in the future, which seems from the web reports will be Windows
7.

My internet connection is REALLY SLOW so I'm downloading stuff at 2.2 - 2.9
Kb/sec which means 1meg in about 6-7 minutes on a good day. So far I've
downloaded, installed and updated both Superantispyware and Malwarebytes.
Super found 252 adware tracking cookies and eliminated them. Malwarebytes
I'm NOT impressed with at all it froze in Full Scan on some graphic files
(Moved them to a flash drive) then it froze up on a Zone Alarm DLL file. It
did do a Quick Scan and found 5 infected Registry Keys and a Trojan Agent DLL
the Windows/ System32 folder. I'm going to keep looking for another Freebie
Malware program. But I'm still doing your step by step process.

Thanks for your reply. BUT your sending me in a completely different
direction than Shenan is WITHOUT ANY explanation why I should not continue
with his directions and follow your's. I don't mean to be disrespectful but
you MS MVP's need to get on the same page because your causing confusion in
us peasants. And my previous experience with Microsoft techs has not been
pleasing to say the least and the whole Microsoft experience for the past 20
years leaves me wishing I wasn't a gamer so I could go to Linux.

MalwareBytes is one of the best AntiMalware applications out there. If it
froze up -0 you may have discovered your issue. ;-) Bad hardware.

Also - Zone Alrm, eh - I would *highly* suggest removing it and just using
the WIndows Firewall. I have seen more issues come through here because of
third-party firewalls than with the Windows firewall itself.

We are volunteers - there is no page. I do not know PA Bear personally,
probably don't even live close to PA Bear. Not to say I wouldn't mind
meeting them someday - but - it's not like we are any different than you.
People giving freely of their time with their experiences and knowledge on a
subject. ;-)

Well, I finally got Malware to run and added Avast! Home Edition as a third
Anti-virus platform. Took removing Zone Alarm from my system to get
everything running right. I've run through all your steps and it only took 4
days to do it all thanks to my slow Internet connection.

But in the end nothing changes, SP3 still will not install with the exact
same results.
