Norton removal tool

I downloaded and used The Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton systemworks
2003 pro. I was not aware it was a buggy program.

On two different machines with xp home and xp pro. Now I have the same problem
on both machines.

Msinfo32.exe is not working and gives me an error message "Can't collect
information"

when I try to re-install norton I am getting an error message: "the windows
installer service cannot be accessed"

I have already tried to download the latest version of the installer program
from the MS website and no luck.

I am sure the problem is related to the Norton Removal Tool, it either
changed the registry or corrupted a file.

Please advise on any tips to fix these two problems fixed besides a
re-install of the OS. I want to get msinfo32 working again and curious why I
cannot reinstall norton.

you might try this:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm

and

http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

if it doesn't help you may
simply need to do a "repair"
of you o.s. with your windows cd.

unforunately, symantec sinks
its data thirsty tenacles deep into the
heart and soul of windows
so when it's yanked out, it won't
be removed without doing more
damage....

after your pc is back to normal you
may want try this for a while:

Have you tried a system restore point to before you uninstalled norton?

He might not be able to do a restore point. norton likes to prevent that. i
know when i had norton i had to disable it to let me do a system win. xp
restore point. And even then sometimes i got a message saying xp couldnt
succesufully restore. i say go ahead and try to do a restore, but if you
cant- go to start, run, msconfig, hit enter. click the startup tab. if u see
anything assoisated with norton, uncheck it. if theres things there from
norton, then the removal tool went nutz, and didnt fully remove it. so try
that and see if u have anything assosiated with norton in your startup list.
if u do, uncheck it, hit apply, then ok, and then finnaly, restart. i dont
know if that helps or not but try it. You can also check the services tab and
see if anything from norton is in there as well. u can stop the service.
Also, try going to google and type in norton processes. there should be a
website listing all the names of nortons procceses that you can find in the
task manager. if there in the task manger u can kill the process, and then
try running the removal took again? the removal tool when i used it still
doesnt get rid of everything, its a pain. so thats why i suggested looking
for traces of norton and getting rid of them.

removal tools, sysmantec, ick, bad combo. i'd hate to be u right now. if u
get this promblem fixed and u get rid of norton, i suggest avast antiviruis.
its free and works great.
