My advice is get rid of Norton you will always have mixed conflicts with it
and problems, go for AVG free edition at www.grisoft.com

If your Norton Version is nearly to expire you can have a free version of
Avast or AVG to install on your computer to protect you from viruses and you
need to have a firewall like ZoneAlarm or comodo to protect you from
intruders and hackers.
I can't really say for sure that Norton is responsible about your problem
completely, it could be you did have a corrupted drivers from other
third-party software or even MS local system drivers.
It doesn't mean you have Norton or any other Anti-virus you are protected
and you will not have trouble other than infection, there other issue can
contribute to the cause and Norton struggling to live with it ( I'm not
defending NIS, I had this issue on Laptop! and did correct it by reseating
the RAM and clear the Dust ).
Bottom line Common send with safe hex your chances in getting infected or
other issue will minimum or none.
Here are the links for the free AV if you don't have one already:

I'll chime in to recommend that you dump Norton, whether it's about to
expire or not. In my view, It's the *worst* antivirus product available.
Nass's recommendations of AVG or Avast are both good (I use Avast myself)
and there are several other good choices.
