Windows Firewall/Norton IS 2005

I uninstalled Norton IS 2005 with their removal tool from the Symantec
site. It seemed to do a good job and all was well. However, my "Windows
Security Center" still says "NortonInternet Security is currenlty ON."
Why would it still say Norton IS is ON when it's not even installed?
I've deleted all the residueSymantec/Norton folders left on my drive
by the removal tool and haveremoved almost all of the Norton/Symantec
registry items.

I am now using NOD32 and Comodo Firewall Pro.

Any help, please?

Thanks

Symantec's removal tool should only be used if you have trouble using its own uninstall or via Add/Remove Programs fails.
Are there any Norton/Symantec apps still showing in Add/Remove Programs?
Are there any directories w/files/folders left in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data?
Are there any directories w/files/folders left in C:\Programs Files?
Are there any directories w/files/folders left in C:\Programs Files\Common Files?

No to all...all clean, gone.
If all of the above are negative run the Windows Installer Cleanup tool and remove any Norton/Symantec if listed.

No Norton/Symantec were found, only Adobe Acrobat Reader and a few
other items but no Norton.

Any other ideas, Brian. Windows Security still says "Norton Internet
Security is currently ON." How is that possible?

Thanks for your response, sir.

This problem can be fixed by rebuilding the WMI repository. If you have Windows XP SP2 installed, run this command:

rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository
(Click Start, Run and type the above command)

Which tool, and which version of the tool?

Did you get it from this page:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

I thought the removal tool was supposed to remove all the residual
registry entries. It sounds like you did this manually. If this is the
case, I wonder why the tool didn't work (assuming it was the proper tool
and proper version). I guess it's just another case of Norton being the
rude houseguest who refuses to leave!

If nothing else works, there's always RegCleaner:

http://www.capetechsupport.com/download.htm

This will allow you to safely remove all Norton/Symantec traces.

Click Start > Run, type in regedit and press Enter.
Expand to:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\shared\security center\monitoring

Is your firewall listed?
No.

Click on Symantec firewall.
Is anything in the right pane?

Yes, Default (REG_SZ/value not sett) and Disable Monitoring REG_DWORD
with a 0.00000001 (1) shown.
Double check the registry to make sure all Norton/Symantec entries are gone.
In the menu bar click Edit > Find.
Type Norton and start the search, when completed type Symantec, then NAV, then NIS and then firewall.
Make sure anything found is related to Norton/Symantec before deleting and/or back up any keys before hand.

OK, I will do this as soon as I can and answer back...

(Sorry for the double-posting; I just didn't know which group to apply
this need).

Thanks for your help...

No, it does not remove _all_ of the registry entries. The tool didn't
work because Norton doesn't know _how_ to make it work thoroughly and
I guess they don't want to have the tool mess with the registry. Yes,
a rude houseguest which is why I kicked them out after two-years :)

I am following Brian's instructions in his posts but thanks for
posting. I'll stick with one leader/procedure at this time.

Brian, should I not complicate matters by following you registry
cleaning procedure or applying what Ramesh Srinivasan has interjected?
Thanks. I am holding until I hear from you or Ramesh.

Well, Brian, I searched the registry for all of those Norton/Symantec
references, including NIS, NAV, and firewall and only came up with
a reference (for nav) as "navw32.exe" but could not find that .exe on
my computer. However, I did find an empty Norton folder in my program
files (which I thought I had deleted), I threw it away.

The Security Center still says "Norton Internet Security is currently
running".

I did find this in the topics in antivirus/firewall:

"Which antivirus and firewall programs does the Security Center
detect? The Security Center can detect if you are using firewall or
antivirus software on your computer. However, it can't detect all
firewall and antivirus solutions.

There are some antivirus and firewall solutions that the Security
Center does not detect at all. This group includes all hardware
firewall solutions, such as network routers. For more information,
click Related Topics.

Some antivirus and firewall programs are designed so that information
about the programs can be reported to the Security Center. Such
programs can provide specific information about their status, such as
whether or not an antivirus signature file is out of date.
The Security Center can detect the presence of some other firewall or
antivirus programs, even if they don't provide information about their
status. _However, the Security Center can only detect whether or not
such a program is installed on your computer; it can't report the
status_.

If you're unsure about the status of your antivirus or firewall
solution, or if you receive a Security Center alert that seems
incorrect, please check with your antivirus or firewall vendor to find
out if the software you're running is supported in the Security
Center."

I guess Windows still thinks Norton is here and running. Why, I don't
know...

Advise?

Thanks for your help and input...

The file navw32.exe is the Norton Antivirus Scanning Module, you can remove the entry from the registry. I'd suggest trying what Ramesh suggested and if that fails to work uninstall all firewall and av apps, reinstall NIS 2005, uninstall NIS via Add/Remove Programs and reinstall your new fw/av app.

What does the procedure that Ramesh suggest actually do? Thanks!

Ramesh, MS-MVP

The command repairs the WMI Repository. More details are available here.

WMI Isn't Working!:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/topics/help/wmi.mspx

If that does not help, you may need to manually rebuild the WMI repository as per the steps in that article. That ought to fix the Windows Security Center incorrect reporting problem.
