Windows Firewall/Norton

Hi, My H/P-Compaq PC XP SP2 came with the installed Windowsl firewall.
Desktop Icons for buying Norton after the "Trial Period" were present. Having
experience with Norton in the past/ I removed it using their extractraction
tool. Yes, add/remove programs from the control panel list is "not
recommended". I even ran a search (including hidden files) on Norton and
Symantec and manually deleted all those entries. Hunting for Symantec's site
and downloading their tool is just a form of harassment. But to my question,
I checked the Security Center/Firewall and it indicated that more than one
firewall was active. I turned off the Windows one and there it was- "Norton
Internet Security 2006 Firewall is on." Is this a fluke in the Security
Center reading or is Norton still hiding someplace? If so, is there a safe
way to rid myself of it completely? I'm new and leery of making registry
changes. Thanks for any info!

The preferred method for NIS 2006 removal to use Add/Remove then and only then follow-up with the Symantec removal tool. The latter is only recommended for a failed installation or a damaged Norton Product.

Since you've taken a different approach with the extraction tool(whatever that is), and then deleted files it is unclear what state your system remains.
You might consider using System Restore to return to a prior state or restore the pc with a prior image(if available). If the NIS is still running, you may be able to disable the service(Start/Run/Services.msc) but if you've deleted files and folders that route may not work.

Since you've an OEM pc its unlikely that you could reinstall NIS06 to accomplish a proper add-remove uninstall without restoring the system to the as-shipped condition.

Note: Proceed with caution and at your own risk. Before creating any further damage...now would be good time to backup or create an image of your system and ensure in a worst case scenario that you are familiar with using your HP recovery cds.

Thank you for the info. Actually I followed the uninstall method provided by
NeZero, (I realized now,bad idea). because of problems it created in the OS.
Although now missing from the add/remove programs and I did remove Symantec
from the Startup menu and disabled the program from Services,it seems to be
lurking about in the PC, Norton just doesn,t like NO for an answer. I'll
assume no harm is being done (I hope) and leave it alone. If nothing else, it
is a caveat for others coinsidering that product! Dan
