1. Save off all documents, my favorites, etc that's important. If
you're using MS office save off
c:\documents and settings\all users\application
data\microsoft\office\data.
** this is Windows XP/Windows 2000
2. Reinstall windows (not programs), configuring it to the basic look
and feel you want.
3. Run windows update.
4. Run norton ghost, get it to a basic windows system image
5. Install microsoft office
6. Run office update.
7. Run norton ghost, get it to a basic system, plus office
8. Install and configure all your other programs, except norton.
9. Run norton ghost, get it to a basic system, plus office, plus all
your apps, except norton.
10. Install norton and run live update.
11. Run norton ghost, get it your entire system
12. Copy all of the files you did in step 1 back to your system.
The reason that you do multiple ghosts, is to provide you spots where
you can reinstall your system, with minimal effort. For example mine
are:
00-XPP-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-NO UPDATES).GHO
- Basic system - no windows update
01-XPP-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-UPDATES).GHO
- Basic system - windows updates
02-XPP-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-OFFICE).GHO
- Windows updates plus office updates
03-XPP-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-NO BCB NO NSW).GHO
- all programs, except Borland compiler and norton system works
04-XPP-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-BCB5 NO NSW).GHO
- all programs, including borland compiler, but not norton
system works.
05-XPP-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-BCB5 NSW).GHO
- all programs, including norton system works
So if I want to extend my subscription, I backup all important
documents, reapply the 04-XPB-2003-08-19-TOSH-(2002-8MB-BCB5 NO
NSW).GHO image, and reinstall NSW. Then copy my saved documents, etc
back on my system.
What my hard disk looks like is:
C:\ - 20.028 GB - system disk
D:\ - about 4.5 GB - All my programs to install
E:\ - about 4.5 GB - my most current ghost image
I have another computer in the house that I use as a "server" - I have
an internal network, and I save all thes extra ghost images on it.
