By default, the microphone is Muted. Start the Sounds
and Audio Devices in Control Panel and under the Volume
Tab, click Advanced. This will open up the controllers
for each of your devices. Check out which ones are muted
and such. I bet Microphone is muted.
You might also check the box marked "place volume icon on
the task bar" so you can reach this panel quickly to
change settings.
