My Hard Drive seems bootable. However, the operating system behaves like a
program is corrupt and only starts to load then freezes. I have no CD for
Windows. Came preloaded on a custom built machine. I downloaded a boot disk
yesterday - no help.

Will it boot to safe mode?
Otherwise, it is time to talk to the people who built it. They really owe
you a recovery method.

Thank you for responding Jim. I don't know much about computers. But, after
the boot disk brought it to the DOS setup window. I pressed F8 and was
afraid to try anything other than "last know good settings." The computer is
at a different location than where I am working now. So, I will do what you
suggest tomorrow and try booting in safe mode. Can I somehow contact you
tomorrow with the results?

Right here is the proper place. Append your results to the current thread.
I may not even boot the computer until afternoon anyway.

Hello again. I bet you thought I forgot about you.

I tried booting to safe mode. After several tries, "system32" driver files
scrolled then the screen went black with "Microsoft(R)WindowsXP(R)
(Build2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 2) at the top.

Nothing happened from there. So, I restarted. Ah ha - The windows loading
screen came on with the dots running across, then solid blue screen with
cursor frozen.

I went to setup again - advanced ambios, pressed F7 (?) to load the best
settings - nothing again but a frozen windows loading screen.

I only get to use this computer periodically, thus, the delay in replying.
I am hoping to get something to take home with me and try on my computer
later today.

The company that built my computer is out of business.

Thank you so much, Jim
