UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Hi
I'm getting the above message when i try to start up my pC running Windows
XP Home SP2.

I've managed to run a dell diagnostics disk and ascertain that there is a
corrupt block on the disk.
All the advice I have read says to boot up using THe Windows XP CD and then
run chkdsk /R
I've tried this using the Installation CD that came with the PC but to no
avail so I'm not sure this is the correct CD.
I can find instructions for creating a suite of bootable floopy disks for XP
but this is no use as there isn't a floppy on the machine.
How can I create a Windows XP bootable CD?
I've configured the PC to boot up via the CD-Rom first.

Regards

Carl

You seem to have misunderstood my problem.
I cannot use the hard drive to boot up the PC because of the BSOD
unmountable_boot_volume error.
I wish to know how to create a windows XP boot-up disk on CD so that I can
at least boot up the PC and hopefully run chkdsk to sort out the hard drive.

Try: http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Look for: How To Create a bootable CD to access the Recovery Console -
this 7Mb .iso will give you a bootable Recovery Console rather than
using the 6 floppy set above. Unzip and burn the .ISO file to disc. You
can boot the CD and run the Recovery Console.

Hi

Unfortunately the first link didn't work and the download from the second
link ended up with an invalid or corrupt zip file.

It would be easier to borrow an XP cd or to temporarilly fit a floppy
drive to the computer. Or you can mount the drive to another Windows XP
computer and run a chkdsk on it from there.

Thanks

I do have my original XP DIsk that came with the PC (XP was pre-installed)
and have tried this but it seems to be ignored.
I've created a XP boot disk and tried that, prior to getting the otions
screen a message flags up saying invalid keyboard error (although i used the
keyboard to action F12).
select option 3 on the boot menu (CD-Rom drive), the lights flash on the CD
compartment but then i get a 'Hit F1 to retry or F2 to enter setup).

Your cd might be a restoration cd, you can't do much with those cd's,
they can only be used to restore the computer to factory condiditon.
What XP boot disk did you try? How did you create this disk?

Hi Carl,

What type of connection is on the Hard Drive you are using. SATA or IDE?

Hi

Not sure, how can I check?

think it may be a SATA as my other Dell PC has a SATA.

Hi Carl,

Is your Computer or Hard Drive still under warranty that you are having
problems with? I would contact the manufacturer and explain the situation. I
know there is a definite problem with SATA Drivers from the manufacturers,
dropping the connection while the computer is still on, thus creating the
Unmountable Boot Volume on the reboots.

It is going to keep happening until the drivers are fixed. There is
nothing wrong with the Hard Drive itself. But I would call the manufacturer
of your Hard Drive and tell them what is happening. Unless more people speak
up about the problem, the drivers aren't going to be upgraded or the problem
fixed.

I had this problem with an Ultra ATA 100 PCA Adapter Card from Maxtor,
when it was still new with IDE Drives. And I am having this problem with
SATA Hard Drive in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The Hard Drive is
being disconnected from the computer, while the computer is still on,
resulting an Unmountable Boot Volume on the next boot or reboot to this
operating system.

And the partitions are being deleted. Oh I can undelete them, but the
problem keeps reoccurring.

hi

i think in this instance that it's unlike to be the cause as other issues,
such as being unable to get it to bbot via CD exist as well.
It's long past the warranty stage unfortunately otherwise i'd have gone
straigt down that route.

Thanks

Hi Carl,

Do you have another computer in order to download, if you don't already
have it, Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 Trial Version? If you can't get it
to boot, maybe the partition has been deleted. Once undeleted, you should be
able to run Chkdsk /r using the XP CD, if you can change the boot order to
boot the CD first.
