can't boot form sub nftfs formatted ?device

is it still true that one can not format USB device with NTFS and make it
bootable? even with full USB bios support like pc brought in last year and
half?

I did some Google search and came across a couple of articles stating one
must use fat16. that is rather limiting.

I am looking to setup a USB flash to boot up in either dos or preferably in
xp to run some disk utility. I would also like to make the DVD writer
available to the disk utility.

I have been having trouble to make a CD rom that boots and still let me see
the utility I want. no floppy on that PC

go to a website called
techrepublic.com and query
for the instructions to make
a usb flash bootable.

it basically entails using
a unique formatting utility
from hp.

further, your bios would
have to support booting
from usb as well.

It has nothing to do with NTFS....
the bios must be set to boot from an external USB device...
plus *I think* XP requires a few hacks to even get it to work

You may be confusing the fact that you can not set up a bootable XP
system on any external drive (USB or Firewire drives) Microsoft seems
to have blocked this within XP. However, there have been reports that
people have gotten a "cloned" copy for an internal XP drive to
successfully boot on a USB drive.

in that case I should also be able to boot a cloned windows 2000 pro form
USB stick?

In that case That would be easier as w200 pro can be as little as 2.GAB or
less if no update... just the disk util I need

your logic is reasonable
and but may not be
possible since the w2k.
is older technology.

if i am not mistaken
usb technology did not
exist when win2k was
invented and marketed.

in think it wasn't until
2001 that basic usb technology
began to be marketed.

reasonably advanced usb
technology may not be
incorporated into the design
of win2k like it is in winxp.

in regards to the hp
utility it was written
to create a boot sector
on the usb stick, not unlike
those utilities that create
a bootable cd.

and to my knowledge there
is no other utility like it. perhaps
due to the programming being
absolute, the utility is legally
protected and cannot be reproduced
by another entity.

however, last year i successfully
made a bootable usb stick with
windows installed on it.

it was a fun project.

good luck.

you are right about usb2 support on wok I think there were chip set
drivers for some boards windows 2000. e.g. Intel.

even on USB hard drive, I tried and had trouble installing XP a few year
back. - rather booting from USB storage. With the new PC, thing should be
easier, I hope.

well w2k has to be SP4 to get full USB support, that wil place in about low
3 GB + range,
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/bus/USB/USB2support.mspx
Windows 2000 USB Driver Stack
The Windows 2000 driver stack for USB is different from Windows XP. To
support USB 2.0 on Windows 2000, a parallel (new) driver stack is needed.
This driver stack will consist of Usbport.sys, Usbhub20.sys and Usbehci.sys.
A host controller-specific coinstaller (Hccoin.dll) will also be provided to
ensure proper Windows Update installation in the Windows 2000 scenario.

Microsoft will not provide USB 2.0 driver support on Windows 9x or earlier
Windows operating systems.

For additional architectural details on the Windows XP and Windows 2000 USB
driver stacks, please refer to the Windows Driver Kit (WDK).

thanks for your input.
---------------------
the other day i came across
one of the commands used
via the recovery console.

if i recall it may have pertained
to the bootcfg command.

there is a switch called redirect
and it seemed to pertain to
redirecting the boot to usb.
i think it involves re writing
the boot ini

i am not sure how to use the
switch, but seems to be for
usb disks.

perhaps you might find it
interesting with this project
and let us know what you
discover.
