No basic connectivity

G

Guest

Please, can anyone help with my lack of connectivity between two of a three
computer home net. The main computer is XP Pro, then a XP home and a Win 98
sys.
They are connected by a 4 port hub (netgear). The problem is with the XP Pro
(ICS Host) and the Win98. Cannot ping one from the other or visa versa. XP
Pro and XP Home connect fine. The XP Home and Win98 also have connectivity
and ping successfully.

I have swapped ports and cables, nothing changed.

Note: an earlier post (3/29/05 "Can't connect Win 98 client to XP host") by
me has TCP/IP settings of all three computers.

Thanks for any help

Randy,

Try posting complete IPConfigs for all computers, instead of sections of some.

Also, what is the bridge on #1? Bridges and ICS are problematic.

HI Chuck,

The bridge is something the XP Pro network setup wizard created. It apears
to bridge between the local connection an a 1394 something or another.

I removed the bridge as part of troubleshooting, but problem unchanged.
I can delete it if it is unnecessary. (which seems to be the case from
reading posts)

#1 can't ping #3 and 3 can't ping #1

Ping: 1 to 2 ok, 2 to 1 ok, 2 to 3 ok, and 3 to 2 ok

I used technique you prescribed in an answer to someone else to gather and
xmit the IPconfig info.

Anything else I can provide?

Much thanks,

Randy

Randy,

Let's enumerate your problems. Take the following code (everything inside the
"#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Randy,

I saw some interesting details in the CDiags you posted. I need those details
correlated by tests from the Windows 9x computer.

Sometimes hi-tech solutions like fancy batch files don't work (as in Windows
9x), so you need to try a more basic approach. Note the different instructions
for Diag.bat, below.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "diag.bat", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\diag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\diag.txt, first check Format and ensure that
Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and
paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

OK, Randy,

Enough diagnostics.

As you said, no problem between MH030805 and rehp4. Numerous problems between
those 2, and Mine. Asymmetrical ones.

MH030805 can ping Mine, by name, and address, with no problem. Rehp4 cannot
ping Mine by address, nor get its address. Neither MH030805 nor rehp4 can net
view Mine, by name or by address.

Results from Mine are even more interesting. Mine has no contact with Rehp4, no
ping nor net view, by name or by address. Mine resolves the address of MH030805
wrong, but does get a reply from that address, and can net view to that address.
Mine gets no reply from pinging MH030805 by its known address, nor from net view
there.

The view of Mine from itself is the really interesting part. Mine resolves its
address as 4.0.0.3, the address of the TV card, but gets no ping reply from that
address. It does, however, get a reply from it's expected address
192.168.0.254. It also, interesting enough, gets net views of itself, by name,
and by its expected address.

I think that at least part of the problems are caused by the Microsoft TV/Video
Connection at 4.0.0.3. But also start by checking each computer for any
contents of files Hosts and LMHosts, located in
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc" on MH030805 and Rehp4, and on "C:\WINDOWS" (I
believe) on Mine. Any entries of 127.0.0.1 are OK, anything else is suspicious.

Randy

cdiag eon't run on the win98. Error msg says 'This file does not have

What is going on?

DOHH! The detail I always forget. Rename "cdiag.cmd" to "cdiag.bat". Then run
"c:\cdiag.bat".

The old batch file (i thought about .sys and .com) , I remember writing
simple batch files 20-25 years ago. Thing of the past for me.
Well it ran but did not produce much information. (to my eyes)

THis is from the win 98 machine and it does not have a connection to tthe
internet.
That is the result of my problem.

Randy,

I saw some interesting details in the CDiags you posted. I need those details
correlated by tests from the Windows 9x computer.

Sometimes hi-tech solutions like fancy batch files don't work (as in Windows

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Randy,

The Hosts.ICS file is created by ICS for clients that have ICS assigned
settings.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309642

Case sensitivity is the subject of a lot of discussion; as I have read it is not
important in Microsoft systems, though it is for *nix. I use upper and lower
case interchangeably.

Sounds like CDiag results didn't change significantly. Which bridge was it you
deleted? I wonder where that .82 address was for MHO? Did you change CDiag on
all 3 systems before running it the last time?

We're getting to the point where LSP/Winsock / TCP/IP corruption on Mine is the
only possibility. If it's not a firewall.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm> or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.

If no help yet, un install and re install TCP/IP.

Randy,

The Hosts.ICS file is created by ICS for clients that have ICS assigned
settings.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm> or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.

If no help yet, un install and re install TCP/IP.

HI again Chuck,

The REHP4 XP Pro the ICS machine has a dial up connection and under LAN or
HI Speed had two connections listed Local connection and one called 1394. The
network set-up wizard creates a bridge between these two connection. This
iis the bridge I removed which required resting to IP and subnet mask in the
local connection. I believe the settings were in the bridge. Anyway I lost
the MH030805 connection and had to run the wizard t get it re-conected. The
IP is automatically detected. What was once 192.168.0.2 (before you got
involved) became 192.168.0.148 which became 192.168.0.82 after the last
(yesterday) changes.

Yes, I updated cdiag and diag with the .82. I didn't find any other
parameters that needed changing. THe Computer names are the same.

I will review the links you provided and try to determine next step.

Thanks a lot for your help and patience.

Randy
