Auto DHCP not working.

G

Guest

I have a wired home network based upon a host/client PC with 2 desktop
clients and 1 laptop client

The host/client (downstairs) runs XP Home . It has 2 Nics installed, one
connecting to cable modem, the other to a hub. This hub is connected to
another hub upstairs. The client PC's (XP Pro, 2K, Me) connect to the
upstairs hub

This has been up and running for a over a year with no problems. All IP
addresses were automatically assigned via DHCP (I assume this to be software
router i.e ICS host)

Just recently I lost internet connectivity from the clients. One minute
working then next not.

Connectivity was only regained when the network was set up using static IP
addressing.

I'm trying to get working again with via DHCP. I've done some research
being a novice at networking and have reset the TCP/IP stack on the host
using the netsh command. This has enabled the downstairs "client" to revert
to auto congfig. This now OK. However upstairs still won't work unless
statis IP's are assigned. I tried resetting stack on XP pro machine but no
joy.

Help appreciated

BarrowHill,

What specific settings and results do you get on each computer when set for
DHCP? When set for static ip addresses?

Can both computers access each other, and the internet, with static
configurations? Provide ipconfig information for each computer, with DHCP
enabled on each.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Chuck,

Many thanks for quick response.

All PC's can access internet and each other with static addressing or a
mixture of static/DHCP addressing. If IP Auto configured (169.254.x.x) i.e no
DHCP server found, then cannot connect to internet or see each other

IP configs as requested when all set to obtain automatically

OK, the computers upstairs, which are connected to the host downstairs, depend
upon the ICS server on the host to provide DHCP. The settings on Medion - IP
Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes, and Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . :
192.168.0.1, make it appear that ICS is enabled there.

Is the "Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing" service running on
Medion? What does ipconfig look like on the 3 computers upstairs, when they can
access each other and the internet (ie, how are you getting round the problem
with ICS on Medion, to get internet service?).

I've given incorrect information and probably confused you (as well as me)

The "PC to Internet" NIC is the only one where the Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP)properties are set to obtain the IP address automatically. Access
to the internet from this PC is OK. Under ICS, other users are allowed to
use (and control ??? - both boxes ticked ??) connection to access the internet

The "PC to LAN Hub" NIC has to be set manually, to allow upstairs PC's,
which also have to be set up manually, to access the Internet.

Now, If I reset the TCP/IP stack on the downstairs PC, the "PC to LAN Hub"
reverts to obtaining the IP address automatically (as shown in connection
properties). However, access to and from the other manual configured
upstairs PC's cannot be achieved. Obviously there is no internet connection
for the upstairs PC's

If I attempt to reset the TCP/IP stack on the upstairs PC's, whilst this
happens, the systray network connection icon immediately indicates that there
is limited or no connection for this PC.

So where once all PC's network connections obtained there IP addresses
automatically, now there is only one (Medion "PC to Internet" connection)

If I've set for static IP addressing and want to revert to DHCP addressing,
do I need to (re) enable DHCP and/or run the network connection wizard for
each PC ?? This is assuming the downstairs PC "PC to LAN Hub" connection has
been set to obtain IP address automatically.

Hi,

This problem sounds very similar to my network. It all just disconnected two
weeks ago and the Network Connections just keep coming up 'Limited or no
Connectivity' on the LAN while the internet will connect where the PC is
directly linked to the internet. The ipconfig details look very similar to
those on your network.

The only way I have managed to make the system work apart from setting up
static IP Addresses is reset all the network connector using 'netsh int ip
reset' on all the PC's.

Have asked Microsoft technical help but have only received questions about
whether the Firewall is switched on or off so far.

Keep you updated.

Cranbrook,

Thanks for your feedback. Look forward to any response from Microsoft
support. I have Windows firewall and Panda firewall "On". Until this problem
I never had any issues with both running

I see you got working via DHCP by the reset command on all PC's. What OS's
were you running ??. I've 4 currently connected - XP Pro, XP Home, 2000, and
Me. I tried the netsh command on Me machine but not recognised/found. Is
there an equivalent command for Me (9x) or don't I need - in testing I do
believe that the Me machine connected DHCP when downstairs host was reset -
I've done so much testing/checking I can't remember.

I'll reset all I can, setup again and restest.

Disable the Windows Firewall. You may not have had issues with both
running before, but a) there is no reason to run two software firewalls
and they certainly may cause conflicts; b) the Panda firewall is
superior to the Windows Firewall. There was a recent update from MS for
the Windows Firewall which you may have installed via Automatic Updates
and that may have changed things that worked into things that don't
work.

Malke,

Thanks for you reply. Apologise for lateness in my response but I been away
for a few days; just got back. I'll do a you say and switch off the windows
firwall on all machines where I have Panda running.

Thanks

Hi,

I tried to resolve the problem with MS online Support but this has been very
slow.

Eventually I went out and bought myself a small four port router which will
allocate IP Addresses to the PC's and act as a connection point for a
broadband modem. The router was straight forward to set up and has a built in
firewall, filtering and various other options. The internet was then
accessible from all the PC's without having to connect via the main PC.

Hope this is useful
