networking

I am trying to network two PCs through a switch. I have limited or no
connectivity on the host. I get no error messages on the client. Apparently
DHCP is not working, when I try to repair the connecton, it says it can't
repair because of the IP address. I tried to assign a static IP but still no
go. I'm running xp pro on the host and xp home on the client. The switch
shows connectivity. I can ping the host from the client, but can't ping the
client from the host. We have DSL Internet connection. I had this setup up
and running a couple of years ago with xp pro on the host and win 98 on the
client and it all worked great. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks

Have you run the XP networking wizard on both computers?

This is generally a case of a corrupted LSP / Winsock.

yes I have. Also, I just did load win xp pro on ours (I upgraged our computer
with new hard drive and such). It was doing the same thing before I upgraded.

Check the network protocols you need are installed for the
NIC/LAN. If you've got SP{2, the Windows firewall is ON by
default, either use a third party firewall, or in any case
set your LAN computers to trusted zone.

I had just reloaded win xp pro (see previous reply) and I am getting the same
results with both the original setup and now. I am thinking possibly has to
do with the adsl internet we now have. When I try to setup the home network,
it changes the adsl network part from dhcp to assigned ip addresses (running
the nework wizard) which is supposed to be set on "obtain an ip address
automatically" even though I'm running the wizard on the the network card
for the home network, not the card for the adsl. This has happened three or
four times now. And every time I run the wizard, the host computer is set
back to "this computer is connected to the internet through another computer"
instead of "this computer is connected directly to the interent".

I turned off windows firewall and turned on the one which came with my
antivirus. I am still getting the same results. I'm not sure how to set the
computers to trusted zone. I did turn off the firewall for the home network
while leaving it on for the internet
