Client PC cannot communicate with ICS host

Hi,
Below is my setup:
ICS host:WIN XP Prof, 2 Network Cards.
Client: WIN XP Prof, wireless network card.
Linksys wireless router configured as switch.

ICS host is directly connected to the DSL modem via network card1.
ICS host is directly connected to linksys wireless router configured as a
switch with IP address 192.168.0.254, with DHCP disabled - (suggested by
linksys support.) via network card2.

ICS host has 1 Broadband DSL Connection.
ICS host has 2 Local Network Connections: Internet and HomeNet.

ICS when set up assigns no IP Address/subnet mask to the local network
connection : Internet
ICS when set up assigns IP Address: 192.168.0.1/subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
to HomeNet.

ICS host connection to the internet works fine.

Client cannot obtain IP Address automatically.
Client DHCP is disabled
Client cannot communicate with host with IP Address manually set.
When I ping host I get "request timed out".

See ICS Host IPConfig below:

Connect the ICS host computer to one of the wireless router's LAN
ports, not to the router's WAN (Internet) port.

I don't understand the "Ethernet adapter Internet: - manually set" for
the ICS host computer. You've assigned it an IP address of
192.168.0.5, which is in the same 192.168.0.x subnet as the "Ethernet
adapter HomeNet". That could cause problems. Since your DSL service
uses PPPoE, Windows XP won't assign an IP address to the Ethernet
adapter that connects to the DSL modem. If you want it to have an IP
address, which would prevent a delay when the system starts, assign it
in a different subnet, like 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x. It doesn't need
DNS Server or Default Gateway settings.

I think that your setup could be simpler, by using the wireless router
as a wireless router:

1. Disable ICS on the present ICS host computer.
2. Connect the DSL modem to the router's WAN port.
3. Enable the router's DHCP server.
4. Connect the present ICS host computer to one of the router's LAN
ports.
5. Configure the router for an Internet connection that users PPPoE.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your response. To answer your question:

There is an error message "limited or no connectivity" on the Local Network
Connection - Internet after I set up ICS and the only way I could eliminate
that is to manually enter the IP Address.

I changed the address to 192.168.1.5 as you suggested and removed the DNS
and Default gateway setting.

With the changes the client still cannot communicate with the host.

There are a few things I will like to clearify:

Using the wireless router as a wireless router as you suggested in your
response works for wireless internet connection. I have tried this before
and it works.

But can I access files, folders and printer on the host computer from the
client computer without physically connecting the two computers?

How can I setup the two computers and two laptops with the linksys router
with only one physical connection to the host/main computer and wireless
connection to the second computer and two laptops so that I can have both
internet connection and also be able to share files, folders, and printer
between all the computers.

If this is not possible with the linksys router how can I achieve this?
Please advice.

Thanks a lot for your help.

You're welcome, DeeBeez. Yes, with XP Service Pack 2, you'll get the
"limited or no connectivity" message, which doesn't indicate that
anything is wrong, on the Internet Ethernet adapter when using PPPoE.
Assigning a static IP address eliminates the message.

I've seen a case where a wireless router used as a switch (wireless
access point) wouldn't pass DHCP packets between the wireless
computers and a wired DHCP server. I couldn't find any solution to
the problem, so we had to change the hardware. I think it was a
Linksys router. Perhaps that's what's happening in your network.

Using the wireless router as a wireless router supports all networking
functions, including file and printer sharing, between the wired and
wireless computers. It should be easier to set up and more reliable
than what you're trying to do.

Make sure that a firewall on the host computer isn't blocking access
by the other computers. XP Service Pack 2 has a built-in firewall
(Windows Firewall), and the computer might have an additional one
(Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, ZoneAlarm, Sygate, etc). If there's an
additional one, disable XP's Windows Firewall -- running more than one
firewall simultaneously is likely to cause problems.
