no audio after upgrading motherboard

I installed a new motherboard, and now my DVD sound is
distorted, I have no sound from the pc speaker, and show
No Audio Device in the Sounds an Audio Devices section of
Control Panel. Sound clips are excellent from MSNBC's
web site. I downloaded new audio drivers for the
motherboard after installation, and all plugs are
correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks,

What did you do, "clean install" Windows XP using the new motherboard?

No, no reinstall of windows, the system booted with no
problems...other than the audio. The system was shipped
with a recovery disc which I hoped to avoid using. The
original motherboard went belly up with no warning, thus
no chance to do a backup before upgrading. thanks
