Using a PCI audio card with audio on the motherboard

Long story. Virus trashed the computer. Been working for over a week to
restore it. I'm almost there.

HP Media Center a1140n, Win XP Home SP 2.

Everything is working except :

-- no sound

-- will not recognize an external hard drive that I use for backup.

Let's deal with the sound question. When I go to Start > Control Panel >
Sounds, the system tells me there is no audio device installed. I have
tried, and tried, and tried to find drivers and figure out what's wrong. I
checked BIOS to ensure audio was enabled -- it was. I quit. Can't solve
this problem.

Is it possible to install a PCI audio card and run it instead of the audio
board that's on the motherboard?

Somewhere I recall there is a setting where you tell the system to ignore
the onboard audio and work with a PCI audio card.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

There should be a setting in the BIOS on the Mobo to disable onboard sound -
after that, just plug in the card, boot and add the new drivers. One word of
caution- avaoid the PCI slot next to the AGP if you can, as some systems get
a bit confused about the two :(
