Nightmare Upgrade to XP SP2 - SFF VL-67 System

I have the following hardware -

Ice Cube VL-67 SFF System
P4 2.8Ghz
1GB Ram - 2x512 Corsair PC 2700
DVD/RW - Mitsumi
Mitsumi Floppy with built-in multi-card reader
Adaptec 2930 CU SCSI Adapter - for 2 PVC Card Printers I use

I have recently tried upgrading to SP2 on this machine and had it lock up
during the windows login screen. I could not get into SAFE mode or use OS
Restore.

The "blue knight rider lights" on the windows XP login screen lock every
time and the system just hangs.

I re-built the machine with a virgin copy of Windows XP-Pro and SP-1 and did
all of the suggested updates from windowsupdate.com and then tried again to
upgrade to SP-2 with the same results. There were no other programs loaded
other than XP with SP1 during this install.

What could be the issue with this install? Is there a driver or Bios issue.
The SCSI IDs for the printers are SCSI 2 & SCSI 3. There is no SCSI device
on SCSI 0. We are booting to a MAXTOR 80GB HDD IDE133 and the HDD and DVD-RW
are set as device 0 on two different IDE chains.

Maxtor - Device 0 on IDE 0
DVD RW - Device 0 on IDE 1
SCSI - AHA-2930CU PCI on PCI 0 (Single slot on MB)
On-Board Video and Audio - No additional cards

We have Adaptec's ASPI layer loaded and this is the only other
"non-microsoft" dll loaded.
