Change SCSI adapter, same type, system won't boot

XP SP2
Computer boots off Adaptec 2940UW.

I needed to give another PC my adaptor in a hurry, and later, when I had
one, installed a replacement 2940UW in its place (same PCI slot).
The SCSI HDD ID is still the same. But I have no idea what the old card's
BIOS version was - whether they're the same.

The PC boots but XP won't completely start. It appears to flash a blue
screen then reboot the PC. Options such as safe mode and last known good
don't get it up.

Can I recover it without reinstalling? I found Q198859, but it refers to
changing SCSI types while I'm using what should already be identical
hardware.

It's ok now.

Using that procedure, Bart PE and regedit, I managed to convince it that it
had a _different_ adapter in there, then was able to add my [original/new]
card with device manager, like in the KB.

Ta anyway...
