Newsgroup Readers in Vista

Newsgroups can be accessed by opening the new "Windows Mail" in Vista. My
proble is that although I have entered the correct logon name and password
for my newsgroup server, this new program keeps rejecting it when i try to
download newsgroups.

Many times I've made a silly mistake by using a modified version of my
username. e.g. entering 'don' instead of '(e-mail address removed)' and so on.
Some programs will let you type an extra space at the beginning or
end of your name or password and send the extra character to the
server even though it's an error. (BTW, it's your news server that
is rejecting your login, not the mail program -- a technical nitpick.)

Do you have this checked? "This sever requires me to log on"
For account name my ISP requires my entire email address.

My ISP is Bellsouth. I have Vista.
I set up Windows Mail to access newsgroups, following the instructions given
by the Bellsouth technician, and no matter what I do, it keeps asking me to
verify my user name and password, over and over.
The Bellsouth person told me that he ran out of ideas, and I should contact
Microsoft.

I also tried setting up a separate newsreader called Xnews, but it keeps
giving me the error: 502 Authentication Failed.

Are there perhaps settings in Vista, or one of the security programs like
Windows Firewall or Windows Defender, that need to be tweaked before I can
authenticate with the newsgroup server newsgroups.bellsouth.net?

Any help greatly appreciated.

A "502 Authentication Error" means that you may have typed your username
and/or password incorrectly. User names and passwords are case sensitive!

If Xnews failed also, then there's something wrong with
your username and/or password.

Are you putting in @bellsouth.net after your username?

For me MicroPlanet Gravity 2.70 works very good. And is free.

Thanks, Julian, but I went over the spelling and case of the username and
password with Bellsouth. They work fine for my emails, just not to
authenticate with the newsgroup server.

I've seen this occur when the mail server expects to see your full email
address as the user name rather than just the first part of your email
address. Try entering your full email address in the user name not just the
first part of you name and see if that works.

For example use Email username (e-mail address removed) rather than adamlink
for both your incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Yes, Michael,

(e-mail address removed)

And if there is something wrong with my username or password, why do they
work to send and receive emails?

Delete your news account and start again...

Account: newsgroups.bellsouth.net
Server: newsgroups.bellsouth.net
Check mark: <This server requires me to log on>
User name: <Your User Name with your ISP>
Password: <Your Password for your ISP>
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119

note. Sometimes User Name means a full email address ... ie...
(e-mail address removed)
or it may mean just Username without the @bellsouth.net part. Try both.
ps. case sensitive

Thanks, Kevin, but that is how I have it. The instructions from Bellsouth
were to do just that.

I did that, still no luck.
Tried it with just my username, as well as (e-mail address removed)

It would make sense if my email didn't work, but the email works fine.

In addition, in my Windows Mail program, I have no trouble authenticating to
access the newsgroups on the Microsoft groups, msnews.microsoft.com

Those groups don't need userid/password.
Try unchecking "This server requires me to log on"

ps. I'm clutching at straws.

Adam here is what I have.

I assume you have already set up the folder named
newsgroups.bellsouth.net when you tried the
1st time around, so from this point highlight that name and right click
and go to "Properties".
It should be pointing to the "General" folder tab. The "News Account"
info should display:
newsgroups.bellsouth.net
In that tab in the User Information area put Just the name or Internet
handle you want
people to know you as, in the Name field. Then give a fictitious E-mail
address, you
can use something similar to mine. Those are the only fields need in
the General tab.
Next go to the Server tab. The Server name: newsgroups.bellsouth.net
Check the: This server requires ne to log on button.
Then fill in your really Bellsouth Account name and password, also check
"Remember passoword".
You do not need to check the Log on using Secure....... button.
Next the connection tab. if you are on DSL (i hope u r), Click on the
"Always connect..."
button, and make certain that "Local Area Network" is also displayed.
Now the "Advanced" tab should look like this:
NNTP : 119
Do not select the "This server requires (SSL) button.
Set the "Server timeouts to equal: 1 minute 30 seconds.
Check the "Use newsgroups discriptions"
And the rest of the stuff in that tab should not be selected.
Press Apply
After this is done you should be able to connect to the news server
and download all the groups for your selection.

And now, see what happens.

No, then I get error 480: Authentication Required.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks for trying, but when I unchecked the log on box, I got an entirely
different error telling me I needed to log on.

Maybe I'm just not meant to get on news groups right now.
