News Groups

Hey All,
I've just started to get this problem. I can't send an attachment within a
news group message. Also if there is a attachment to a news group message
that I'm trying to view, like a picture, I get a screen that says; "Message
can't be displayed". This is driving me crazy, it is only happening in my
Windows Vista Home Premium "Window Mail" program. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to cure this problem?

Make sure the image you are attaching is not open in
another program. It must be closed elsewhere.

Make sure attachments are enabled:
Tools, Safety Options, Security, uncheck "Block images..." and also
uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

Also go to Tools, Options, Send, Mail Sending Format, HTML Settings,
make sure "Send pictures with messages" is checked.

Thanks Gary,
This is very interesting, I don't have a Safety Options only Options but I
did find the "Block Images" and unchecked it. Unfortunetly, it didn't work.
When I still go to a specific responce in a thread in a NG it still tells me
that the message can't be displayed. Also, "Send pictures with messages" is
checked, but I still am unable to attach a picture to a NG message and send
it. Any other ideas?

Sorry, I gave you the Windows Live Mail menu path instead of the
Windows Mail menu path. However, it does remind me of one
possible solution to your problem: upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

The problem you are having may be caused by your antivirus.
Windows Live Mail is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly
aggressive antivirus programs.

Also, email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for
reasons explained here:

Gary,
I disabled the email scaningas you suggested, but it doesn't work. I still
can't send an attachment in a News Group or recieve a picture, that I'm sure
of, in a News Group. As far as I know, it could be recieving any TYPE of an
attachment in the News Group. Now what? I shouldn't have to change to
another mail program, when this used to work just fine but something is just
set wrong now, it has to be!

You didn't mention which antivirus you have. Some of them
are just not very compatible with Windows Mail. Symptoms
often take a while to start showing up. In the case of Norton,
McAfee, and Trend Micro antivirus, disabling the email scanning
is seldom sufficient. We can recommend a free replacement
antivirus that is more compatible.

So, basically, your choice is to replace your antivirus or
else upgrade to Windows Live Mail (WLM). Microsoft has
designated WLM as the replacement for Windows Mail

Since that's not a very common antivirus, I don't know if
it interferes with Windows Mail.
My previous advice still stands. Either uninstall/replace the
antivirus or else upgrade to Windows Live Mail.

I uninstalled the antivirus to check to see if it was it and it didn't
matter. So, it is something to do with the program, now this being said, I
get back to my origanal inquire of what is wrong with Windows Mail

Please reply with an attachment so I can see if it is the server or my
program. Question, why does microsoft ship a program that is not supported
any more with Windows Vista. This doesn't make any sense to me.

Guess what? I can recieve your image and see it! Is there such a thing as
the news group server that I'm trying to send and recieve won't let me?

N

Nick Haury

Well the news server that I'm refering to is a CAD server, AutoDesk's, if
you know what that and who it is. Anyway, like I said, I've sending
attachments and then it quit and I asked on the NG what was going on and
people on the NG told me in no uncertain terms that it was there fault, they
don't know what I'm talking about, talk to someone else, and/or talk to
Microsoft, hence, my asking here. Well, do I have news for them!!! Thanks
for all the help.

Check what format you are using to post to the newsgroup. Some do not allow
MIME messages. So try posting the image attachment after changing the
settings under Tools | Options | Send | News Plain text settings and change
it from the MIME option to the UUENCODE option and see if that gets through.

?
You said you were able to see the attachment I posted here.
Any particular type of attachment?

N

Nick Haury

Gary, I was just answering Steve. I can get your attachment throught this
NG but it's a dead Turkey with the AutoDesk NG. Steve was saying to do
these settings and see if I could send, I guess, to the AutoDesk NG. I, in
turn replyed to him that I couldn't recieve either meaning from AutoDesk. I
sent an attachment after you sent yours and my side said that it was sent
but it didn't show up. After this post, I'll try again.
