Newly installed Windows 2K freezed when starting up...

I just reinstalled Windows 2000 because I have to replace a failing HD
with a new one. The PC worked fine in Windows 2000 Pro. After installing
the Windows 2000 Pro from scratch, it freezed at the first reboot (after
finishing the installation). I looked at the System of the Event Viewer
after booting in Safe Mode, it might have freezed at Service Control
Manager with the following description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
MRxSmb
NetBIOS
NetBT
RasAcd
Rdbss
Tcpip

So I installed the drivers for network, video, RAID, audio, etc but it
still freezed at the last stage of the "Starting up..." screen. I even
installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 with the same result.

What can I do to make it work?

THANKS,

cpliu

I just installed Windows XP on top of non-working Windows 2000 Pro. Windows
XP installed smoothly and it's running well. It happens that my scanner
driver works much better on Windows 2000 than on Windows XP so I'd like to
make Win 2K work.

Thanks,

Difficult to say at this point. You might try a clean install without the
network adapter. Once Windows is installed try downloading the latest driver
from the manufacturer's web site for your NIC.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Dave,
Thanks for the good suggestions. The mainboard (Asus P4P800 DELUXE) I use
has onboard network adapter so I can't take it off. I did install Win2K
clean by using a bootable Win2K CD. Eventually, I used the backup of a
cleanly installed Windows 2000 that installed on another mainboard. It
runs fine. I will have to hold on to that copy for now.
BTW, I remember reading somewhere that you should reinstall a system if
you switch to a new mainboard. Seems my old copy still works on a new
mainboard. Any potential danger in doing that?

Thanks and happy holidays,
