Win 2K Pro hangs/freezes on installation

I am trying to install Win 2K Pro on an IBM NetVista desktop (2251-TAU) and
it freezes on the Win 2K Pro splash screen with the starting up progress bar
about half way through. If I re-boot it freezes at the exact same point. I
have done FDISK to create a single partition and Format (NTFS format). I've
done scanndisk /all including surface scan (successfully completes), RAM
memory test (using Simmtester's DocMemory and it comes up clean). The only
external devices I have attached are the mouse, keyboard, and video display.
Any ideas what may be causing the freeze? Thanks for your help.

I noticed on the motherboard that there is a row of cylinder-shaped towers
about 1 inch high. Not sure what they are but they all are the same and I can
barely make out that the markings on them say 10V and 120 something. One of
these was slightly corroded on the top of the cylinder tower. Could this
point to a bad motherboard? I did at one time run diagonostics (part of
recovery CD) and everything passed. Thanks.

Hi Mart, yes this looks like it may be the problem. And one of the symtoms is
failure to POST and getting progressively worse. Thanks for your help and
good information. Not sure I can fix this so it may be the end of the road
for this desktop, at least the motherboard. Thanks again for your help and
good info.

Hi HM,
... And one of the symtoms is
failure to POST and getting progressively worse.

It could certainly account for the progressive worsening - but doesn't
really explain the 5th (and 6th?) option (Command Prompt Only) on the WinMe
Safe Mode Startup Menu - elsewhere <g>. But I guess that seems somewhat
academic now.

Hi Mart, my guess is that IBM modified it. That same Startup menu (6 options)
comes up when you hold down CTRL key during bootup. Thanks again for your
help.
