just so you know I installed it on vista home preium and so far all is well
scan took about a half hr on a 160gig hd.
On my xp I am going to wait for it to come via the update since it is a paid
version on that one

This new version of AVG Antispyware will NOT scan in Safe Mode. Try it and
see. Please post back if I am wrong.

This new version of AVG Antispyware will NOT scan in Safe Mode. Test it out
and please post back if I'm wrong. I think that the guard is now necessary
for scanning and the guard cannot run in Safe Mode. Rather inconvenient, but
that seems to be a trend nowadays.

that is true and there are several complaints on their forum and I agree
with the forum because some trojans need to be taken out in safe mode or
they do not leave
I do not understand why AVG did it this way

As workaround while it is not working in this working you can apply the
registry patch which can be downloaded here:

http://fileserver.ewido.net/public.cgi?id=20990

We'll have fixed that issue with the next setup.

We're sorry for the inconvenience.

....so if I'm on XP and using the Free AVG-AS, there should be no reason for
me to upgrade right now, since the definitions will continue to update. I
and others in this position (not on Vista) could just wait it out as far as
I can see by the forum replies here... Correct me if I'm not understanding
correctly, but I'd rather just wait until Grisoft makes that correction and
I don't have to fiddle with the registry patch to be able to run AVG-AS in
SAFE mode. Any idea of when the "setup" might occur, and would you be so
kind as to let this forum know when it happens, since many people here
don't follow the Grisoft forum.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

you should wait till it is fixed and when I hear I will let you know
for those who get it via the pro version we might not have a choice but to
update and wait for the next update when it is fixed. I do not know that
yet because I have not received the update yet

fyi
I did the registry update for safemode on my test computer and the only
thing that happened is Windows Defender told me there was a change to the
registry and I allowed the change. It just adds a key as shown

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\AVG Anti-Spyware
Driver

service:
AVG Anti-Spyware Driver

safeboot:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\AVG Anti-Spyware
Driver

file:
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.sys

I just told WD to allow it.

I did it in both Vista and My test computer

I also do not want it to run in startup since I will be using it as a stand
alone and will not purchase this one on vista and test computer.

What I did even though I do have 30 days and will update it manually.
Remove the Check - Start when windows starts up
Remove the Check on the Residential Shield

You have no choice but to leave avg antispyware guard.exe on or the program
will not run at all but by using processor explorer it uses virtually no
memory or cpu usage with it on in vista or xp home sp2.

So there was no catastrophe when doing the registry update
