AVG 8.0 Pro is out
Comes 2 ways
one with AVG antivirus & Antispyware
One with AVG antivirus, antispyware and Firewall (and a bit more)
AVG free 8.0 will not be out for a few months yet
Also if you are upgrading take a look here

http://www.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1148#faq_1148

Click on "I am using 7.5 how do i upgrade?
it will take you to a site where you put in your liscense

I have been beta testing 8.0 and I think it still needed some work before
they released it but overall it is pretty neat. It is a major change from
7.5 in user interphase.

I have not found out yet when 7.5 is going to not supported and I am
checking it out and awaiting an email

this is the website if you want to read about the software

ok here is the deal
first 7.5 will be supported until the end of this year
if you have avg pro with firewall you will be updating to avg pro 8 with
firewall and it will contain the antispyware program in it.
if you have avg antispyware pro- you will be updating to AVG antivirus 8.0
Pro and it will have the antispyware program built into it.
If you have the 7.5 suite now you will also be getting the 8.0 suite
I suggest to wait a few weeks before doing this.
Grisoft informed me that you will see a popup in your program reminding you
that you need to upgrade. I suggest you use this to upgrade because it will
uninstall the old program.
I do suggest you go to the website i gave you and get your new liscense
number for 8.0. this will also show you which version you will be getting.

Put it away somewhere so when it does popup you already have the liscense
number.

For those who need their liscense number for AVG antivirus/firewall
double click the icon to open the program
click on "Control Center"
Highlight "liscense" and click on the button at the bottom that says "copy"
Open Notepad
click Edit/Paste or ctrl V and it will paste the liscense number in there
Print it out

For AVG antispyware
Right click on the icon in the right side of the taskbar
Click on "Information"
It will show you the liscense number
Click on it and then click- copy to clipboard
Open Notepad and
click Edit/Paste or ctrl V and it will paste the liscense number in there
Print it out

Thats it

How well does it get along with other real-time anti-spyware
scanners, (Windows Defender in particular)? Since AVG Pro 8 is
an integrated solution, I'd think that the WD realtime protection
could be disabled. Of course logic and software don't always
apply...

avg antispyware 7.5 I had running with WD with no problems and avg 8.0 is
also having no problems with WD
As long as you set up the scheduling not to run at the same time there is no
conflict. This goes for any antispyware programs you run.

Just remember if you are using the pro version now and you have avg free
installed too, you must uninstall both before you install this one.

I tested it first to see if it would uninstall avg free and antispyware
(7.5) because it said it would but it only uninstalled avg free antivirus
and i wound up with both 8.0 and avg antispyware 7.5

I reported this to Grisoft so maybe they will test it and fix this so that
is why i am recommending those who have the pro to uninstall it first before
putting 8 on.
Also the user interphase is totally different than 7.5 so do not be
surprised after you install it

I just installed AVG 8 Pro last night, and disabled WD's real
time protection as a precaution.

Actually, 8.0's installer found my 7.5 Pro installation and
removed it quite cleanly (less a handful of leftover registry
entries).

Not only the interface, but the facilities available. I was able
to dispense with McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox (replaced by
LinkScanner). The IE and FF toolbar integration worked properly.
Web browsing in both IE and FF (2.0.0.12) is a bit slower, but
that's to be expected with both Web Shield and Link Scanner
active.

I did run into an odd problem/conflict with SpywareBlaster and
Spybot S&D Internet Explorer ActiveX immunizations, though. The
initial scan after installation reported 197 suspect spyware
registry entries; 190 from SpywareBlaster and 7 from Spybot. The
system was clean before I installed AVG 8, so the presence of
these registry entries, even as disabling entries, must be the
trigger.

I'll be reporting this to AVG once I do my scan tomorrow.

btw if you find websurfing is slow you can disable webshield
i found that in the beta when i unchecked it- websurfing was a bit faster

ok because i use this computer as a test machine, i did find that the
webshield and linksearch were slowing down firefox and ie 7.
Also when it installs you should take the check off to install the yahoo
toolbar but if you do this you must not install the webshield and linksearch
because they work hand in hand.
You should do the entire install as a custom install
this goes for any version of 8.0 that you are going to use

Also when it installs you should take the check off to install the yahoo

Do you mean that the Yahoo toolbar is an integral part of the package,
Robin? - and that without it you can't use the webshield and linksearch?
That seems very strange!

I thought the new AVG would mean I could get rid of the McAfee Site Advisor,
but maybe not?

R

Robinb

alan yes the toolbar is part of the linksearch, when you click off in the
tool bar the linksearch in the avg program becomes disabled until you click
it on again. I do not like this toolbar, it makes the browser go slower. I
did like the linksearch but i like site advisor better because there is no
hesitation when you google and who needs another toolbar?

As for the webshield, the beta one had a problem, it slowed down the
browser and for some (not for me) it slowed the computer down. Also you
have to disable it to use windows live messenger or you cannot connect.
We all thought Grisoft would have fixed that part since EVERYONE complained
about it but as i see they have not.
Also i advise you not to install it yet especially since you have the suite.
Right now it is version 8.1. Grisoft is supporting 7.5 until the end of the
year and i am betting they will come out with an updated version once they
get more complaints and fix this one. If you cannot wait just do a custom
install and leave out the webshield and linksearch and make sure you see as
it goes through installation that the yahoo toolbar option is not checked.

alan and others i am going to change that a bit
when you install avg 8.0 install the webshield (I still think you should do
it as a custom install) but as it proceeds to install make sure check mark
is off for the yahoo toolbar.
I have been doing a bit more testing and I reinstalled the avg 8.0
antispyware/antivirus pro and as long as the toolbar is not there the
browsers are not slowing down.

But for now if you use ms messenger, yahoo messenger or even windows live
messenger you need to disable the webshield for this to work. or you will
connect but it will disconnect you as fast as you connect. A lot have
complained about this and i am hopeing Grisoft will issue a patch for this.

Alan if you are smart you should wait a few months to install your 8.0
suite. Let them take out the kinks first. Try going here and see what
others are talking about before you go and install it. I will not update my
avg pro with firewall for a few months on my good working computers until
they get some more of the kinks out.

Robin, all this is very useful indeed, and I'm very grateful to be able to
benefit from your experience with this. I was taking a look at the
discussion on the Wilders forum this afternoon, and was already thinking -
too soon, too soon! You've pretty much confirmed that thought. So certainly
I shall stick with the tried and tested 7.5 for a while longer. I'm in no
hurry to change.

Besides, thinking back, I must have installed the original Security Suite
within a day or two of its original launch, and I remember it was quite a
while before they got that running smoothly and ironed all the bugs out. I
don't really want that bumpy ride over again.......

Thanks again for all the info. Invaluable.

Dissapointed with AVG 8.0

I just installed AVG 8.0 on my machine this morning, and I must say I'm disappointed. I've been an AVG reseller for 3 years now (and a user for more than 5), mainly because I liked the way the antivirus program did antivirus protection. Now you can't get just plain AV protection; you have to get the anti-spyware too.

I could live with that, but at the same time they've raised the price by $13.00 for a two-year subscription.

But the worst thing is, since installing AVG 8.0 this morning, my quick launch icons no longer work, and I can't double-click my desktop icons to run programs. I can open files and folders on my desktop, but I can't start a program unless I right-click it and click on "Open". I uninstalled 8.0 but that hasn't fixed the problem yet. I believe there are other issues, as some slightly unpredictable things have happened but I haven't yet traced them down to find out the extent of it.

I can tell you this: unless these issues are resolved quickly, I won't be an AVG reseller for much longer. I don't know what I'll turn to, but there's got to be something. Even if they do fix the problems (like the much slower system with it installed, the much, much slower scan times, etc.), I'll have to decide if it's still worth the price increase. I've heard NOD and some others might be worth looking into.

I just hate having a product I've supported for so long in one day become something I can no longer trust. I didn't want to have to start looking for a replacement.
