AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5...

P

Pat Willener

I have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly ewido antispyware). This product
is no longer supported or updated by Grisoft as of Dec 31 2008. Grisoft
recommends to upgrade to AVG 8.0 Internet Security.

However, AVG 8.0 also contains antivirus and a firewall, which I both
already have, and do not want to replace.

Since an anti-spyware tool that is no longer updated is worthless, I am
looking for a replacement, free or paid.

I also use
- Windows Defender
- Spybot Search & Destroy

Any recommendation what I should use as a replacement for AVG
Anti-Spyware 7.5 ?

superantispyware pro (if you get it from me you can get it for $19.99 with
lifetime updates and also I will send you a manual on how to use it that is
valued at $20 for free)
all you need to do is email me so I can give you the link
take the no spam off my email address
I like the pro better than the free only because it has real time protection

also you can download malwarebytes like kaymen said and get the free version
but you need to do a manual scan each time but you should have both on your
computer anyway for extra protection

WinDef and SAS Pro are both working real-time. So either WinDef has to be
configured accordingly or instead of SAS Pro use SAS Free.

not true
Windows defender can work and visa versa with superantispyware pro.
Windows defender works as a service not as an application so it doesn't
interfere with superantispyware. As long as you set the scans of both not
to run at the same time there is no problem.
I have superantispyware pro on 30 machines running WD and I have never seen
to date a conflict between the two and being on the Superantispware Pro
forum lots have it running together also with no problems.

Installing two (2) real-time A-S applications to one (1) operating system
is inadvisable. Uncheck use Windows Defender in Tools, Options to configure
to on-demand scanning.

Thank you, Robin. I have long disliked SUPERAntiSpyware because of its
idiotic name and logo. But it may be my only choice if MBAM contains an
active AV component. It is really not clear on their website if it does,
so I am waiting for Kayman's response on this.

Once this is cleared up I will start to evaluate these products. I will
gladly come back to your offer if I decide for SAS. (Which already
sounds very much better than SUPERAntiSpyware...)

Thank you. Does MBAM also contain an active antivirus? If so, I can't
use it.

Not sure what you mean. The Free version of both MBAM and SAS are on-demand
applications which only will update and run at your command. Whereas the
Paid versions have a real-time function; They'll (can) update and scan
automatically based on your configuration.

Malware includes viruses of all sorts and shapes.
Both SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes combat computer viruses, worms,
trojan horses, spyware, adware and some rootkits.
I believe that SuperAntiSpyware was actually the leader for including
malware into their VDF (not only spyware/adware) and understand that
"Morro", the scanner developed by MSFT, will follow this suit.

I still disagree with you kayman and this is only for WD not any other
antispyware software.
Because WD works as a service it doesn't interfere with Superantispyware
Pro, again I have it installed on over 30 computers and none of them
conflict running both.

Pat, I also have malwarebytes Pro on my test computer and believe me I have
lots on that computer to make things go haywire but that is why it is a test
computer, but it behaves fine. Superantispyware free is on that one also
It is exactly like the free version
the only difference is that you can schedule scans and it runs in real time
protection once you purchase it. It has NO AV components in it. It is
strictly an antispyware program just like superantispyware Pro.

With Superantispyware Pro you can trial it for 30 days and see if you like
it first
Malwarebytes so far, you cannot (they are working on this but for now they
do not have this option.)
Malwarebytes Pro doesn't for now, give you the ability to set a scan weekly
just daily, superantispyware pro does.

I am testing Malwarebytes Pro because I have clients (not many) that could
not run superantispyware pro version but they could run the free version.
(go figure) and I want them to have something pro to protect in addition to
WD.

Malwarebytes installs now as the free only. When you purchase it, you put
in an ID and Key and it turns into the Pro version and again the only
difference between the pro and the free is what I typed above.

My suggestion to you is to download Malwarebytes and run it as a free
program for now. Download superantispyware pro and use the trial. See
which one you like.

LOL. So what if it runs as a service..does not mean anything. Why do
you believe WD will not cause conflicts or any other program will cause
conflicts with WD when WD runs as a service? Do you know why it runs as
a Service?

Windows defender still runs as a process and so does SUPERAntispyware
when in use which can cause conflicts with each other.

I'm wondering if this is hypothetical or you know of documented cases
of conflict between the two. I used both for quite awhile and am not
aware of any conflicts. Btw, AVG's AV app picks up some spyware, tho
obviously that's not its specialty.

I am not aware of any issues but there could be a potential one when
running two or more *real* *time* anti-malware programs. Why? The
possibilities of high CPU, blocking of other program's protection
features, and just plain-weird funkiness such as unsuccessful Windows
Updating will be greatly increased when running two or more *real*
*time* anti-malware programs.

In relation to insatlling multiple real-time A-S applications to an
operating system, if I were you, I'd conduct a thorough research starting
with Google and consult specialized newsgroups/fora; 'nuff said.

Good luck :)

Thank you all; I will do more research, testing and evaluation based on
your replies. But first I have a weekend visit to Nagasaki - I will
start when I'm back next week. Have a good weekend!
