AVG 8.0 has been updated to 8.5

AVG told me that the 8.5 Pro versions will come through the updater on 8.0.
At this time they are still testing this process and in a few weeks we will
see it come through.
As for the new identification protection part- this is only for AVG 8.5
Internet Security and those who have it now will have an option to download
this component separately and it will install inside their AVG.

As for the rest if you want it you will have to pay for it. That is why you
see it on their website as a separate installation.

This was as of yesterday. I would wait a few weeks and see what happens
just in case they change their minds- you never know

There is no big difference in the AVG Pro antivirus nor the AVG Pro with
firewall. The big change is with the IS version.

There are a few changes in the free one but they are also minor

Thanks for this info Robin. It was only a few months ago that I felt able to
accept that AVG8 was running properly. This all looks disturbingly rushed
(in the same sort of way)to me, and I'll be in no hurry to join the 8.5
party!

I agree to wait especially since you have the internet security version and
that one has the major changes in it

not necessarily true
I tried nod32 and I did not like it
every software upgrade goes through loops when there are new versions
Avira is doing a version 9 and I am sure it will be a bit loopy when it
first comes out

btw for those who have Internet Security 8.0 this is how you update to 8.5
and add the identity protection

You can add AVG Identity Protection to your currently installed AVG
Internet Security by using the AVG 8.5 installation package:
- Download the latest AVG Internet Security 8.5 installation file
from:

http://www.avg.com/download?prd=ais

- Click on "Download AVG now (paid version)". The installation file
corresponding to your AVG product will be shown, save this file to
your Desktop.
- Double-click the file on your desktop and follow the steps indicated
in the setup program to begin installing your AVG 8.5.
- When prompted, select option add remove components
- On the Component Selection screen tick all the components you wish
to install, including AVG Identity Protection.
- Restart your computer.

It seems odd that I've had no automatic notification of any of this through
my existing AVG8 security suite. I wouldn't know about the existence of this
new stuff if it were not for your posts here, Robin.

Ah sorry Robin - I just reread your original post, and I see you mentioned
that they'll be shuffling around for a few weeks yet. Presumably at some
point the automatic updater will tell me something, but not yet.

I have a feeling because you are on the internet security program you will
be getting an email from them.
In fact I think all of their clients who have the pro version will be
getting an email from them on how to update.

just another fyi
I received an email from avg. I wanted to know for sure if AVG 8.5 for AVG
Antivirus Pro and AVG antivirus with firewall will come through the
"updater" in the 8.0 program and they re affirmed it will but could not give
me a time period when it will happen.

Again, the AVG Identity Protection will be
available for AVG Internet Security editions only and can be downloaded at
their website and the instructions on how to do this is on my other post.

They told me once the pro is updated, the free version will follow.

I installed avg internet security on one of my test computers to see what
this new version is all about
I did it as a custom install because I still did not want the avg toolbar
and the plug in for windows xp office
it installed fine and it also put another icon on the desktop for the
identity protection
The firewall took a bit to configure for my network but I had the same
problem with avg pro with firewall but everything looks ok so far
it is not using a lot of memory but it has not done a scan yet
There are so many options in the internet security program- you have to be a
rocket scientist to figure it all out, that is one of the reasons I do not
like full security programs but for you Aland and those who have it already-
I am betting you have most of the options on the 8.0 already
I will play with it for a few days and let you know how it goes.

Yes, there's a big screenful of icons even for AVG8. My guess is that you'll
have just one more - the 'identity protection' unit.

no actually that doesn't show up on the main userscreen- that shows up as a
totally separate icon on the right side of your task manager and also on the
start menu

Strange, don't you think, Robin? One of the main advantages of the suite
(once you get used to it) is that everything is accessible from the one
place.

well this one is a bit tricky because you can actually purchase the identity
protection as a stand alone product. It has no settings in the AVG userphase
it shows up as a totally separate product and it is totally separate in
add/remove programs. There is an icon there for avg and one for the
identity protection.

The icon is in what used to be called " the system tray," as robinb said.
When it is checking something, it becomes active and you can see it doing
something. Hover the curser over it, and it will tell you what it is
checking.

I just did an upgrade for a client of mine who has the internet security
8.0. I downloaded the paid version 8.5, (I did not uninstall 8.0)- checked
off the "add-remove components like AVG told me to do in the email they sent
me, did it as a custom install, checked off everything including the
identity protection (he uses Outlook so I checked off the plugin for
outlook also)-it went to the next screen and I unchecked the toolbar (I
still do not like the toolbar) and continued the install. Everything went
fine. It needed a reboot and after the reboot it needed to do updates.
Once that was done I went into the firewall settings to fix anything that
was off. he needs print and file sharing enabled and it was blocked so I
set it to allow. and tweaked a few more settings.
In the advanced settings I had to reset the date and time it scans and a few
more settings.
Just so you know when it installs it keeps your license number but all your
settings change because it is actually installing a new program, so you have
to do a bit of tweaking. Also it again will ask you to "allow or disallow
certain programs so you will be retraining it again for a while. but
otherwise it is working fine
So aland I see no reason for you not to do it

Thanks for this feedback Robin, which is encouraging. I'm sure I will do it
at some point, but I still feel happier waiting a while to see what
creepy-crawlies might emerge for other users during the next few weeks ....
