New hard drive

I had XP Pro on a hard drive that crapped out the other day. But now when I try to put it on the new drive, all seems fine until the computer restarts. I comes up at the installation screen (the one where it says "30+ minutes remaining) and after a few seconds an error window comes up stating the "l386\asms file could not be installed". I tried another clean install, thinking that might do it, but that same thing happened.

I have my W98SE cd, should I try installing it first, then upgrading XP Pro over that

Any help would be appreciated.

This is the wrong newsgroup. Posts like this should go to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

However, your problem is bad installation media. (Your CD is bad, probably
scratched or a bad burn on a CD-R).

If this is the original installation media you may be out of luck. If it's
a copy try making another copy from the original installation media. If you
don't have the original installation media go buy a copy.
