Win XP SP2 installation failure on new hard drive

B

Barb and Ray

Trying to "undo" a half-way installation of Win XP Sp2 that failed on a new
WD 160GB hard drive. Computer belongs to a friend whose husband attempted to
install this software without success. Upon trying ourselves, it reached
"Installing Windows" and completed about half. It stops with 35 minutes
remaining. We have tried everything we can think of to get this going, with
no luck. The following
error message comes up:

Installation Failed.
D:\386\asms.
Error Message: Incorrect function.

Fatal Error.
One of the components that Windows needs cannot be installed.

We managed to reach the place where the hard drive could be formatted, did
that, and on restart it goes right back to 39 minutes remaining, runs for
the next 3-4 mintues, then stops. This process has been repeated four or
five times, with the same problem. This is a Gateway desktop with 384 MB
RAM.

Thank you in advance for whatever help you can give us.
