Problem Installing Xp on New HD

Hi,

I'm trying to install Xph SP2 onto a new HD.

Problem/Error: After system files are copied and system restarts. The Xp
logo comes up with the blue scrolling bars under it. Then it goes to the main
Xp installation screen where it has the status radio buttons and it is on
"Installing Windows XP" with the current time remaining @ 39 minutes. Afer
about 2 minutes I get the following error.

Fatal Error: "An error has been encountered that prevents setup from
continuing. One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could
not be installed. The request could not be not be performed because of an I/o
device error. Press ok to view the setup log file."

I press Ok then I get:

"Installation failed because D:\I386\asms"

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Hi GLM71,

Oftentimes this error is due to a bad install CD. Ensure that the install CD
is not dirty or noticeably scratched/damaged.
If the install CD is one that you (or someone else) burned, perhaps to make
a slipstreamed with SP2 CD, then some files/folders may have been corrupted
during the copying process.

Thanks Patti:

The disk is a "Legal Original" It was obtained by the PC vendor when the
Hard Drive went out on the computer. It does appear to have some small
scratches, and I do not know if it is known to work or not. It and the PC
were brought to me for repair. I will ask the customer if they can get a
replacement???? I'm going to try a new stick of RAM as well. Thanks Again for
the reply.

You're welcome for the reply :)

Asking the customer if they can obtain a replacement CD is what I would do.
