Never ending setup loop

I tried to repair XP Pro by reinstalling over the original OEM install following bad case of drivers which stopped me even using safe mode. Setup goes through to about 13 mins to go (in registering components phase) and then stops with a snappy little message - unregmp2.exe - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL. I suppose this would mean something to someone, to me it means that I can not complete Setup as the error message will not close. I have been through the help routines, and have a sneaking suspicion that my anti-virus software may figure in the problem. To get rid of that I need to get into safe mode which is not available. There seems to be no way of getting out of Setup, none of the options for F8 work, any selection just restarts XP which then says 'Setup does not work in safe mode.....' and then reboots to start Setup again. This brings up the message Please insert your Compact Disk etc. (which I do understand) and the whole merry go round starts again. I think that it is probably time to re-format and start again and have downloaded the Startup floppys but would appreciate any other suggestions, no data on this machine is critical. I would probably throw the machine (and maybe myself) through the nearest window if I reformatted etc. and just got the same result.

Unfortunately the cure is to rename "MSDART.dll" which is on your computer
which you cannot access.
On the other hand a complete new install with a format would wipe that
little sucker of the face of the earth and your install would go smoothely
from there on.Also a good oppertunity to redo all directory structures.

i am having the exact same problem with this loop. i have the cd an
want to install the system over again so i can wipe out the msdart.dl
but whenever the system reboots it just continues where it left of
with the set-up installation bringing me back to the error which force
me to reboot again.

how can i complete a new install?

is there a way for me to bypass this faulty automatic set u
installation when i reboot so i can at the very least have access t
the msdart.dll file to rename it?

help me please. this is so frustrating

I received a reponse from Microsoft that worked.
When the problem occurs, press Shift +F10 to bring up the
command prompt. Then type taskmgr.exe in the DOS window
and press Enter. The Task Manager should be started. If
not, try to press C+Shift+ESC. In the Task Manager
program, select the error messsage window in the
application list and click "End Task". In the process
list, terminate the unregmp2.exe program. Exit the DOS
prompt window and resume the installation process.

It worked like a champ first time!

I too talked to MS. There is another step needed - killing the erro
may not be enough.

Shift+F10, kill the process, WinXP should continue loading, and aroun
23 MORE minutes left to go, the
monitor will flash several times. Don't panic.

Once loaded, get past the
"Microsoft in a box" screens: next, finish. Once on the desktop, lo
in a
user with system admin capabilities (hopefully you still have one). G
to
C:\windows\sr.inf. Right click and select Install. It will ask fo
sr.sys.
Get this OFF the CD!!! The one on C: is corrupt. On the CD, under th
I386
folder, you will find sr.sy_. Double click it and it SHOUL
decompress
itself and load. (Microsoft tech suggests as a convenience, loa
directory I386 from
CD to C: (root) for ease of use NEXT TIME you have a problem! :-0 )

That is the fix for the MSDart, repair/reinstall WinXP problem.

2. The next problem to fix will be the DSL and WinSta.dll problems.
Your instructions from your ISP tells you to use the Networ
Connection
Wizard and do some stuff, then select Broadband, use user ID an
password.
However, the Wizard has disabled this option. AND you find you canno
make
system restore points. And if you open up My Computer, right click o
some
white space in the window and click properties, you will ge
'procedure
entry point RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be locate
in the
dynamic link library winsta.dll. These problems are solve
simultaneously
by:

a. Right click My Computer. Manage, Services and Applications
Services.
Find Remote Access Connection Manager (on either tab). Right click,
Properties. On the General tab, Startup Type listbox, change Manua
to
Automatic. Apply. Ok. Restart your machine.

b. Log in as a user that has System Admin capabilities. Start, Run,
Regedit. Find HKLM\system\Current Contro
Set\services\rasman\ppp\eap.
Export the node by selecting, File, Export. (This creates a backup i
case
of screw-up. If you don't know how to import, maybe you shouldn't b
doing
this.) Once this is done, under EAP is a folder/key 25. Delete it.
Also
delete folder/key 26. (These are the keys for the connection wizard.
MS
will not tell you how to modify the keys for the desired result, yo
must
delete them. They are supposed to recreate themselves, but don't.)

c. Reboot.

Now you SHOULD be able to connect to DSL or recreate your connection a
per
your ISP's instructions. System restore will now work. You shoul
perhaps
create a restore point for fun. Start, Help, Performance an
maintenance,
Using System Restore to undo changes, Run the System Restore Wizard
Create
a system restore point.

BTW, you cannot create a dial-up connection using the Wizard. G
figure.
To do this, bring up your browser. If IE, select tools, Interne
Options,
connections tab. Select Add. Dial up to private network, next, phone
number .... Once done, the connection will be listed with the Network
Wizards and other connections you have off Start, Settings... o
Control
Panel, Network Connections.

If these fixes didn't work, MS's next solution involves installing X
to a
separate place on your machine. This too ought not remove your data.
Once
installed, your DATA, not applications, should be transferrable betwee
OSs.
The last option you don't want to know!

If these do not work, call Microsoft: 1-800-936-4900. You get TW
whole
free calls to them if encountering problems during installation.
(Take
copious notes!)

If this works for you, do your part, pass it on. Just because MS
doesn't acknowledge the problem and there are LOTS of people who are
experiencing it.

Good luck.

This boat is getting too small for all the people in it.

Okay, so I've got the same problem (updating XP Home on a Dell 4150 to
XP Pro); I used the taskmgr.exe trick to get by the original error, but
then when the setup finishes, I get this error message: "Error code:
0x80004005" and it says that Windows cannot finish the registration
process.

Bigger problem: this is my girlfriend's computer and if she thinks that
I killed it, then it's sofa-sleeping for me from now on.

Good luck. [/B]

OK, So I did the CRTL + SHIFT + ESC and this brought up the comman
prompt. Type in taskmgr and this will give you the Task Manager. En
the Task and End the Process. Exit out of Task Manager. If you reboo
and you get a Virtual Memory error or Paging File error do th
following:
1. boot to the CD that you have. It will ask if you want to do a repai
installation, recovery console, or exit. Do the Repair installation
This will ask you if you REALLY want to do this. Say yes(I think i
says that). Allow the system to copy files. It will ask you for you
product key. Type this in. Verify the Regional and Keyboard settings
If all goes well, you will have the system up and running. Any othe
questions, Just email me with the error code MSDART.DLL file
(e-mail address removed) and I will try to walk you through it.

Peace
