XP setup fiasco

I decided to reinstall XP Pro to upgrade my existing XP Pro which wasn't
working properly. In the middle of the installation, I got the error
'unregmp2.exe cannot find entry point: Procedure entry point GETIUMS could
not be located in the link library MSDART.dll'. From there, the setup would
run and thenI began to get a new error: 'Setup could not locate the
installation you want to upgrade. Contact system administrator'. Now I can't
open windows at all! I can't restore in a previous setting or use safe mode?
What can I do to be able to repair this?

It sounds at the point, your harddrive containing windows is hosed. If you
have any important data files you wish to keep (documents, music, pictures,
etc), I would suggest trying to attach the drive as a slave to another
computer, and copy them off - from there, put the drive back in the original
computer and procedure with a clean install - first starting with a format
(to wipe the slate clean) and begin again.

My! I'm amazed at how helpful you guys are. I thought this was where
knowledgeable techs resided. If I wanted someone to recommend buying a new
computer or new HD, I could ask my neighbor.

I too had the exact same situation except that I was unable to continue with
the install. (And I had made an image of my drive before starting such a
stupid venture.) When I did a hard reset, Windows attempted to restart the
installation, ending with the same error. I have reason to believe that my HD
is in GOOD condition and can't buy your contention that it is "hosed".

It would seem to me that a qualified MS tech could decipher the detailed
error message and determine why the installation program can't find a
particular file or procedure. Or at the very least tell us how to restore the
missing file. For us dummies, finding a missing entry point in a link library
is a bit much.

As a power user, I am rather reluctant to start over on a clean drive as it
takes me nearly a year to reinstall everything. Come on guys, please find
someone who wrote the stupid install program. I too have searched ALL through
the KB without success.

A year to reinstall everything?? WOW! You definitely need help!

If you are such a "power user" where are your words of wisdom to the OP?
I a good idea what the problem is, I just put the problem in terms the
OP would understand. But for a power user like you, I'll explain it - based
on the OP's post (although not as detailed as a power user such as you
think), setup is finding the incorrect version of one or more dynamic link
libraries (that's dll's for you a power user), most likely finding the
existing ones in the %windir% - excuse me C:\windows\system32, that have
been upgraded via hotfixes or service packs, which are incompatible with the
older installer found on the CD. During setup the installer copies dlls and
executables to %temp% - excuse me a temporary directory to use during
installation - as it searches it finds an existing system32 directory first,
before it finds the proper file in the temp directory. This is why it is
suggested to backup important documents and files, then format the drive -
it will then eliminate the installer from locating incompatible versions of
dlls and trying to use them.
Oh, if you don't like the answers here feel free to add your
knowledgeable answers to assist the OP's, but spouting off criticism and
sarcasm about those who for "free" are trying to assist those in "need" does
nothing but trash your own credibility.
