My Notebook won't shut-down or restart from the "Start" tab

I downloaded SP2 on my new Notebook and now the computer won't shut-down or
restart from the Start tab or any automatic restart, reboot balloons after
downloads. The only way I can shut-down or restart is to use the power button
above the keyboard. My 'so called' support person from Sony/Vaio directed me
to a page that instructed me to hold the power button down for 7 seconds,
etc..., but nothing works. It doesn't affect the computer for me to use the
power button, but I'm concerned that this may be the beginning of other
issues, cuz when there are several windows opened/minimized at the same time,
the computer is freezing up (something that also didn't happen prior to
downloading SP2). Should I just uninstall SP2 (even tho it took 7 hours to
download via my dialup)???? Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

I would also suggest running a disk cleanup and checkdisk:

Afterward, install the following:
