Pc restarts after I shut down

I have this stange problem, my pc will restart after I shut it down. It
completely shuts down for about 30seconds and then it restarts. Sometimes the
only way to get to shutdown is to hit the power switch.
What is causing this? It seems to happen on certain days. Could it be my
virus scanner? I'm using nod32.

Hi kirk:

Once the power to your PC has been disconnected, ain't nothin' gonna
turn it on again unless someone presses the Power button. Ergo, your PC
has not completely shutdown.

Check your computer manual to find out what /really/ happens when your
computer shuts down - you may be surprised.

A less likely possibility is that your computer's power supply is
damaged so it doesn't completely power off your computer.

By any chance, is your house haunted? ;-)

There's good information on shutdown problems here:

Nope, not possible. SP2 is the latest.

make sure the Shut down Power Button not stuck in on the case front,
sometimes if the case been undone and not fitted properly can cause this
issue with power Button mechanism parts.

Hi again:

For whatever it's worth, I had a similar problem years ago, where my PC
would restart shortly after shutting down (not as long as 30 seconds,
though.) It was my /farkakt/ power supply. Nass suggested you look at
the power switch - that was also suggested to me at the time I had my
problem. It's worth looking into.

You could also make sure that a BIOS setting hasn't changed. There may
be several settings for "Wake on ....." Like LAN, Serial, keyboard, or
some other event.

Not true. Unless it is also unplugged, there is still some current to
the motherboard, and it could start via BIOS settings like "Wake on
LAN" or "Wake on Modem."
