PC wont Restart

After a clean install of XP home with SP2, the pc will shut down normally but
if restart is selected the pc starts to shut down then hangs. Occasionally it
will get to shut down but then the screen just stays blank. The shut down
icons (after pressing start - shutdown) are not as normal. It comes up with a
box with a drop down menu. ?? (logoff, shut down, restart, standby and
hibernate).

I have deleted the partitions 3 times and re-installed but same problem.
Prior to format restart worked ok?

Thanks in advance for any help

Ps I have searched and followed links but nothing seems to fix it.

Is Safe Mode of any relevance?

Just in case you didn’t try these, although I don’t know whether they apply
to your case or not:

I wouldn’t think another re-install will resolve the problem, provided that
correct procedures have been followed on the 3 other ones. I assume that the
Windows XP CD being used is the one which followed the PC when you received
it. Your statement that shutdown behaves “randomly†could indicate a conflict
with drivers etc which are not updated in accordance with the PC setup before
the “clean installâ€.

You haven’t given the cause for why the “clean install†was performed. If
the hardware and software worked when you upgraded, restore of the original
OS along with the software/drivers that did work, SHOULD work, when correct
procedures have been used and followed. However, if the cause for the “clean
install†was any kind of problems, your case have to be assessed from that
situation / symptoms.

Following links may be useful, in case you have not checked them, as your
formerly posted “Ps†does not describe the links you checked before your
original post:

Not having any description of your PC, however assuming it might be a Dell,
another reference could be of interest:
