Computer won't shut down from Start

Recently, my computer (HP Pavilion a1510n, a real lemon) won't shut down from
Start, although Restart works. Nor will it shut down from the Task Manager,
requiring that I shut it off with the power button. What's happening?

Thanks, Bert. Alas, the issues discussed don't apply.

Yesterday, quite spontaneously, the computer started shutting down properly,
So far, so good.

Sounds like you may have an issue with your power supply. It's not an
uncommon problem. A technician (and many teenagers) can check it for you.

But before you go pay someone, try this: Open your computer case and
(carefully) blow out all the dust. Better now?

All that dust impedes the airflow inside your case, which leads to
overheating, which can lead to what you're experiencing. So can
improperly folded cables.

Leonard,

Thanks for the dusting tip. That may be why the problem stopped yesterday.
For quite another reason, I opened the case and, while I was in there, used
Dust-Off on the fans, etc.

Thanks!

Haven't heard of Dust-Off but you should know that it's probably better
to use your breath. You don't want any residue to accumulate on the
electronics, plus some of the components might get damaged by the force
of the blast. In any case, if you decide to use a spray, make sure it's
been designed to use with electrical components.
